Also my family is all lobbying me for a puppy. I am on the fence about getting a dog. Tell me why I will be glad/regret it.
How many extra fucks do you have to give for the needs of another living thing at the end of an average day? Some? Tgen dogs are delightful. None? No dog.

That's the thing. I'm already 90% responsible for two kids and 100% responsible for two cats. I'm just not sure I want to add another needy creature to the mix. They all promise me that I won't have to be the one responsible and the big kid (i.e. H) promises he will do everything but...yeah.
I love the idea of a dog, I'm just not sure I'm ready for dealing with actual dog hair and smells and poops right now.
My brain is at max capacity and I'm so close to just losing it. Work is killing me. Studying is killing me. Kids are killing me! I was venting to DH and he tossed this to me an early Christmas gift. I immediately giggled.

Don't get a puppy. Get a dog a year or two old that's already potty trained.
I was so sad about leaving my local grocery store Publix behind when we moved. But our new store is WEGMANS and every time I go I want to buy ALL THE THINGS!!
I would be very reluctant to move somewhere that does not have a Wegmans. Congrats on the indoctrindation

The thing is, H wants to get a pitbull but he's afraid of what an older dog might have experienced and not knowing the history, so he wants to get a puppy.

I don't think that is a good fit for y'all. Pits need major training and socialization, with cats and kids and you being iffy on it I'd only agree to a lower need breed/mix.

People say that all the time, but there's no guarantee that you're going to get a "good" dog with a puppy either. It's a myth.

Depending on the dog, you might be able to know its history. And if you get it from a rescue based foster, you'll know its temperament esp with kids and cats.

That's good to know. What types of dogs are lower need?

Do you have a prison training program in your state? The dogs that come out of those programs are well trained and well socialized.

Boxers, Boston Terriers, Italian Greyhounds all come in as being relatively easy to train and having easy to medium exercise needs, and minimal grooming needs. I'd use this to help find a fit of what mixes to look for.

this. ttt I know several people who foster pitties who have cats and kids. You can absolutely find one that is pre-temperament tested that would work for you guys, thought it might take some time.
because seriously - NO. NO PUPPY. it doesn't matter who says they're going to "do it all" they can't and they won't. Puppy is in a constant state of NEED. When you are low on fucks to give because of all the other things with needs it'll just drive you nuts. If you don't feel like you have extra gas in the tank at the end of the day then you do not want a puppy. An adult dog - maybe. Puppy? NOPE. It's temporary, but....still. It's a long temporary.
tangential @ ahead.....
But I'm currently feeling pretty anti-dog, so I'm going to be a poo-pooer of this topic. I mean, I love my dog. Which is good because I do not love having a dog right now. it's only because I love THAT actual dog that I'm not some asshole trying to rehome his fuzzy ass. That and I'd never forgive myself. Also pixy would never forgive me. But I end every damn day with an absolutely empty tank of caring about anybody needs but my own. To the point where it's damaging my marriage. But hopefully your H is less likely to sit blithely oblivious while every living creature in the house decides it must TOUCH YOU and NEED THINGS at the same time. And you will not have a high energy dog with bad knees who can't go for long walks or runs anymore and is thus always a little bit of a basketcase. Also your kids are older and do not literally attach themselves to you in order to eat and then throw up on you and then ask for more food.
So I'm projecting and it'll be fine! get a dog! (but seriously...not a puppy. I've been anti-puppy since college though when my brother's girlfriend decided it would be a GREAT IDEA and my life at that point was nothing but free time)
I really think 2 is about the ideal age to adopt a dog. They are over a lot of the difficult puppy stuff and you have a good sense of their personality, but they also have a lit of life left. Pit's tend to stay in the higher energy phase for a long time although this varies a lot by dog.
We got our pit through the city shelter but she had been in foster. She lived with 2 little girls and countless cats and did well with them. The family worked with her on things like walking well on leash and not freaking out when she sees other dogs.
wawa one of these days we need to see if Olive and Teddy get along. Her car sickness just makes it so difficult to take her anywhere.
Remember how I said that for reasons unbeknownst to me, I don't feel like I've been directly impacted by sexism in my industry? Luck or obliviousness, not sure which. Ever since that conversation I've been paying more attention.
Just noticed that the ASCE (American society of Civil Engineers) lifetime achievement award, which they issue to people in 5 different categories per year since 2000, has NEVER EVER EVER gone to a woman. At least it doesn't look like it. Unless it was a woman named Eugene or Charles.
I'm not surprised I guess....but I'm still mad. I mean...women are few and far between in the old fogey ranks of engineers, but still. Fucking A man, NONE?? Especially in the Education and Government categories since those would have been marginally easier for women to break into back in the 70's when the current winners were getting started on the careers.
The ranks are similarly thin on POC. I can't be as sure of the history there since there aren't pictures of past year winners, but from some cursory googling every year's winners look basically like these (2015 and 2014):
Thanks everyone! I think now is not the right time for a dog. Maybe in a few months we'll revisit the topic and see but right now, I have to say no.
I am not sure where you live but if it snows there I highly recommend waiting until Winter is passed. Walking a brand new dog in the snow sucks.
we brought teddy home the day Snowmaggedon started in 2010. Poor decision. we had to shovel out a pooping courtyard for him in the backyard because the snow was about as tall as he was and he still had pins and stitches in his leg.
I ran into the man that i was a part of getting fired for sexual harassment about 8 months ago in the relationships section of Barnes & Noble. I managed to not make eye contact and move away. But I was so worked up by it. He harassed me as well for a decade, but I filed the report for a friend after becoming a supervisor because it was getting worse during his divorce. The tiny good thing though is he is alive and by being in that section I guess trying to help himself n

as much as everyone in my family is begging for a dog, I know that I don't have it in me to care for another living being right now and that care would fall to me 95% of the time
I may seriously adopt a senior next time. Josie was 1 when we brought her home, but I really love how low maintenance she is at 7. She just wants a place on the couch, a decent walk, my food, and maybe to toss her football for her once or twice.
