Also, I think I've figured out what it is about these perfectly nice people that makes me unable to stand them...
It's an attitude of "why would I want to do that?"... Where I'm nearly always up for anything.
... So.. Example...
We got a whole bunch of new board games for Christmas. They don't want to play any of them. Because why would I want to learn a new game? (we're talking simple games here, like Dixit)... We played Quirkle on one previous visit, they know how to play that, so it's all they want to play.
And it's not just a board game thing. It's EVERYTHING. "why would I want to do that?" is a question I've been answering, in earnest, way too much over the last week.
She's convinced we can't add spices and salt because "some people don't like it" and by seasoning nothing she's doing them a favor and letting them "add their own seasonings."
My MIL does the same thing. Solidarity.
She also overcooks everything. Like, big beautiful filet mignon BLACK. *cries*
My MIL gave me a recipe once that said "burn roast." I clarified if she meant sear and she was like "no, burn it."
That recipe card may have mysteriously disappeared.

Ugh. This is my brother and SIL, to a tee. Their interests are pretty much dogs, their church, and genealogy. Anything outside of that just doesn't interest them much, and they have zero ability or desire to see things from another perspective.
Plus, they can't resist commenting on things that don't interest them. Every.single.time someone mentions a photo or story they saw on FB, my brother makes a point of saying "we don't do Facebook". Dude. WE KNOW. I told a little murphy's law story about how vegans keep being inadvertently seated in front of the serrano ham at the bar where DS works, and one or both of them piped up with how the vegans just need to get over it. Nice.
I forgot to mention that my mom pretty much cooks everything in the microwave. She made salmon in the microwave. She cooked an entire lasagna in the microwave. It was wrapped in saran wrap and I said, "Well, that's great, I'm never having kids because the plastic has leached all its chemicals into my food." She also cooked potatoes in the crockpot. I don't know what's wrong with using the stove top or oven.
It was great to see my immediate family, awkward to see some of my uncles, but overall I think I want to reassess Christmas festivities and I know my parents feel the same way. There was just TOO MUCH stuff to do and people to see and parties to host, presents to wrap, and unwrap, and put away, to enjoy much of it. All I want for Christmas is to spend time with my parents and sisters and husband and child(ren). Everyone else creates noise and it's not fun. Especially not fun when there is all this weird political hostility abrewing.
Next year we may just stay home and do a small family thing. My parents can come here. And then we avoid having to do the large extended family christmas thing.

Well... I did do mashed potatoes in the crockpot for Thanksgiving... But that was because I had like 20 people here, and not enough oven/range space. And, mashed. So... Cook, butter, cream... It's all good.
But potatoes any other way should NOT be done in the crockpot.

My dad makes lobster tails in the microwave every year, and they are rubbery and terrible.
Thankfully my mom makes everything else. Her cooking is awesome

My parents apparently sent out new years cards this year. I got mine today. It's pictures from Christmas of them and my kid. And printed on it they wrote "love, Mom's name, Dad's name & Baby H."
It might be irrational, but I'm super pissed at them. The least they could be done is told me they were going to do this.
We made up with my MIL (I guess) We haven't spoken to her since she got mad at us for some STUPID petty shit in the beginning of Nov. She then told my husband and I that we can F-off over the phone and then hung up.
She finally came around two days before Christmas and acted like nothing was wrong. It was strange. She gave my daughter a karaoke machine...a thoughtful gift however my daughter can't read yet. She's just a really strange person. I'm keeping her at arm's length, I'm still hurt that she told me to F-off and then never apologized and acted like there was no elephant in the room.
