Subscribing to Blue Apron for a few months is actually what helped me become a more confident cook (it's a meal delivery service where they send you all the ingredients for the recipe, and you cook it). I had to try new techniques and use new vegetables to cook the recipe but had clear instructions and pictures to follow. In particular I always used to overcook meat because I was so worried about undercooking it, but I felt more confident about the cooking times being safe when I followed Blue Apron's recipes.
I don't like DiCaprio and don't care if he ever wins an oscar.

I've been toying with signing up for that! The problem is, I only want to do it like once a week. I think something like that would significantly expand my repertoire. I get into grooves and make the same thing over and over again. I used to be more adventurous, but there are too many opinions at the table anymore.
Blue Apron's family plan (which I've never done) has a 2 meal a week option, and you can skip weeks easily. If you PM me your email, I could send you a free box - I'm not sure if it only works for the 2-person plan or can be used on the family plan. But I don't have anyone else to give it to so I don't mind if you don't end up using it
This thread is so random already I'm going to throw in an odd question.
What is the difference between the HRC campaign logo changing to acknowledge Kwanzaa and when it was changed for SSM court decision and gay pride? Why when it was changed to acknowledge Kwanzaa is it seen as pandering but when it was for gay pride it was seen as supportive? Both changes are targeting minority groups. Is this one of those things that the intended audience gets to decided? If the gay community finds it supportive it is and an outside group can't tell us it's pandering and if the black community considers it pandering than it is and again, an outside group can't tell the community to just view it as supportive?
ETA: I think the Rosa Parks logo was a bad choice so in my musings here I'm not thinking of that one. Just the Kwanzaa one.

I did something similar for a month. It was to make life easier, which it did in some ways b/c I didn't have to plan dinners much or measure anything, but the recipes are great for learning new techniques and trying out new ways to cook.
Everything had a protein, sauce, one to two sides of veggies in different sauces or with fresh herbs and the cooking techniques weren't usually things I would do on a week night.
I'm way more excited about Hateful 8 than Star Wars. We'll probably go see one or the other as early as possible on New Years Day. The only reason Star Wars might win out is because I am worried about the crowds at Hateful 8.
I think H and I are going to the road show version at 2:45 pm today!!! Its on 70 mm film with the intermission and everything. I will report back afterwards.
I saw where someone received 3 Brussels sprouts as a meal for two from Blue Apron. I would lose my shit.
There is no way that was an entire meal. The meals for two are crazy generous portions. I have done it a bunch but its much too much chopping for me to do on a regular basis.

I agree that it's pandering. When HRC changed the logo to a rainbow it was to support a landmark supreme court decision, it went over well b/c a lot of people were doing that. It was in support of something that was a big change, right? It was also a political victory that a lot of the Democratic party has worked on at state and national levels.
So when she just randomly changes her logo for traditionally Black holidays, it's not quite the same. I mean, did she change it for Hanukah or Ramadan? No, just for remembering Rosa Parks and Kwanzaa. So I think that is where it turned to pandering for me. I mean these aren't national holidays or issues really, if there was a landmark ruling on a police officer being indicted for killing someone, that would be one thing, but for the holidays it seems odd.

I did Hello Fresh with meals for 4 and it was more than enough to feed my family of 5 and have leftovers. I was surprised b/c my kids eat like pigs at a trough.

That makes total sense. But when she changed it in June for gay pride should that have been viewed as pandering?

Not IMO b/c it was a national change to policy that the democrats, her peoples and her, have worked on. But that is just my opinion. What do you think, was it pandering to you?
Baking is so much easier for me, too, and it's because of the precision. I think I'm basically just a higher functioning version of my child, because I need the rules of a recipe and for the love of god, don't mess around with it. When SO is cooking spaghetti and wants to throw in extra oregano, I can't handle it, because THAT'S NOT WHAT IT SAYS TO DO ON THE JAR. With baking it's like, do this, do this, do not stray from the instruction manual, and you're done.
You and Mr. Wamban could cook beautifully together. I told him once "I usually do the potatoes in the oven instead of the stove because they cook faster and more evenly." to which he responded "THAT'S NOT WHAT THE RECIPE SAAAAAAAYZ"

I viewed the change for Pride (the June festivals) as good marketing. She got out in front of the other candidates as showing support of the LGBT community. But Hillary doesn't need to pander to the LGBT community. She knows she (or Bernie) will have most of our votes since unfortunately, the republican candidates are all anti-gay. I almost wish she did need to pander to us because then maybe someone would be talking about GENDA or other LGBT issues.

This is my biggest concern about the SCOTUS marriage decision. Marriage equality is sexier and more exciting than a lot of other issues because PEOPLE IN LOVE! WEDDINGS! Also, most people are woefully ignorant of the law. I've lot count of how many times I've seen people on these boards say, "That sounds illegal," and all the lawyers are like, "Why? What law prevents that?" A lot of people have no idea what the legal landscape is for LGBT individuals and how many places it's still legal to fire someone for being gay.
But this is up there with women's reproductive rights as why SCOTUS is my number 1 voting issue. He may come across as less crazy than Cruz or Trump, but President Rubio or President Jeb! isn't going to be appointing federal judges who will uphold gay people's rights or women's reproductive rights.

QFT! And GENDA is just one issue. FFS, national gay and lesbian rights groups are still suggesting gays and lesbians go through second parent adoptions of their children because marriage equality does not mean other states will honor birth certificates with two moms or two dads listed on them. I know the republicans want to protect the unborn babies but can we please protect those that are already here by not making their parents jump through hoops to protect them!?
After the SSM decision when someone (an article somewhere??) said the decision was the best thing for the republican party because it took the lgbt issue off the table, they were right. I haven't heard one damn discussion about our rights during this campaign season but everyone knows the dems have a lock on our votes.
Where should we go for MH's 40th next year? Late October, preference for outdoorsy stuff especially cycling. Medium budget, so by GBCN criteria think cheap. We have access to cheap flights to a variety of European destination but US is fine too. He is not an adventurous traveler and has a pretty small comfort zone.
The time of year is what's throwing me. We went Belgium and the Netherlands over his birthday a few years ago and it was cool and rainy. He'd love Denmark or Alaska but they both sound too damn cold.

What about a national park? That is a great time of year in a place like Shenandoah. Depending on how good of a cyclist you are, you could bike part of Skyline Drive. (There are some serious inclines, so I would die.) Or you could always do a couple of days in the park hiking - you can stay at a lodge in the park or a B&B just outside the park - and then head north a bit to cycle part of the C&O Canal Towpath.
SNP is the one I'm most familiar with, but I'm sure there are others that would fit the bill.

The GAP and C&O were our initial plan and may still happen. I am just so very, very out of shape. I'm also a bit horrified by how much some of the crappy hotels along the routes cost. For what this trip would cost we could do something way more interesting. Except it's his birthday not mine and that's what he enjoys. Arrrgh.
A national park is definitely a good plan in general, I just wasn't sure which would still have decent weather.
ETA: It was previously the ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act). Barney Franks was instrumental in attempting to get ENDA passed to protect GL employees. Supposedly it had the votes to pass (but Bush would have vetoed it), except a bunch of the LGBT groups got upset because it didn't protect Trans or gender non-conforming individuals. So it was changed to GENDA and I *think* it hasn't made it out of committee since then.

You still have SO MUCH TIME to get in shape for October. you can do that. I went from zero biking to doing the C&O in about 6 months. Come on!
But you could change it up and stay somewhere like Harper's Ferry instead (which has some cute B&B's) and use that as your base of operations to bike the C&O in each direction half day up, half day back, hike the AT a bit, go see historic crap, etc etc. It'll be chilly in October, but not gross cold, and that way you get a break from just biking and more biking. You could also cut off the stuff at the north where there are less options for places to stay and add on the Mt. Vernon trail to the south?
I have no suggestions on Europe. That sounds awesome, but you know more than biking over there than I do for sure.
All the other multi-day bike routes that MH wants to do are out west.

Napa? I haven't been, but I want to do. There are cycling tours there which are fully supported. But you could also just do a day tour to wineries.
Or San Diego - you can bike around Coronado Island, but also just relax at the restaurants and on the ocean.
I would suggest the PNW, but it could be really rainy then. I think the San Juans are so much fun.
Have you considered Costa Rica or somewhere near there?
We did a European tour in October (all of October to Nov) years ago and the weather was hit and miss - we got a lot of off-season fun things, but wore our rain coats and sweaters a lot. Even in Cinque Terra and along the Mediterranean through Spain.

Not sure where you're from, but Philadelphia can be great in October. We have biking and hiking within an hour, plus (obviously) tons to do in the city.

wawa Harper's Ferry might be an idea. MH has never actually been despite the fact that we drive through all the time. If you guys want to join us we can rent this geodesic dome! www.airbnb.com/rooms/626088?s=FYk2FhwS
My other concern about an 8 day biking trip where we lug our own gear around is that it should be my first semester of grad school. Carrying a laptop and school work does not sound fun.
mryrcn Bulgaria sounds good to me but he wouldn't be game. I have every intention of forcing him to go somewhere less vanilla for my 40th so I will keep that in mind.

Personally, I would do day rides. That gives you freedom to drive to different places for the cycling and intersperse non-cycling activities, like easy hiking or wine tasting or whatever else is around the location you wind up at. Bonus: no lugging all your stuff on bikes. Stuff stays at your lodging.

Update on the hateful eight: it's intermission at the roadshow. Kind of cool that they do an intermission. The n word is every other word so FYI in case that bothers some folks. Samuel l Jackson is really good. The wide angle is cool and I love being able to hear the actual projection of the movie. It's one of those anachronistic sounds like a solari board at a train station.

Not that it really matters, but she did change the logo in honor of Hanukkah (I follow her on instagram). Judging from the comments on the post, many were pleased with it but some were not.
Eta: interestingly, it looks like it's no longer there but the Diwali logo post is still up as well as the Thanksgiving one.
