So glad all the talks about racism led to posting some racially offensive maps.
And?
We post all sorts of things for discussion, not necessarily for endorsement.
And people are mostly laughing and finding it hilarious. I admit you asked people what they thought but people appear to post for the laugh factor not at how horrible it is that people make these assumptions.

Yeah I have to agree.
I haven't even commented on everything that's gone down in the past week bc I honestly don't know what to say other than I hope we can all do better and how sad I am that people have been hurt badly.
Although the majority here is saying how funny they find it, there are a number that are saying "hey, this is making me uncomfortable".
If the past week has taught us anything, maybe it should be to listen more when people actually speak up,.

I'm actually shocked that it's not more racist. It definitely shows how segregated we are, but that's just fact. DD's elementary is the most diverse in her district (10 or so elementary schools) and she has one or two black kids in her class.

I cannot be held accountable for what other people post.
And your condemnation was for the mere posting of the maps.

Looking through H's outsider eyes, the race issues are obvious but the class issues are also stunning to him. That's what "where did you go to high school" is all about. How quickly can I plug you into a socioeconomic bucket? Whenever I'm involved in civic groups, I almost feel like I have to apologize for growing up in west county, but OTH, it is my home. We are weird.

You are 1000% correct. I went to college in Florida and there was 1 other kid there from STL. Of course the HS question came up. We both judged each other (he from John Burroughs(snobby) and me from Mehlville (hoosier). DH is an outsider too and he thinks we're ridiculous too.

At least for the California ones it's more local humor and satire than anything else. Hell, many of our districts are segmented into named ethnic communities, and are a source of pride. These sort of thing need to be taken into consideration. It's somewhat in the same vein as political cartoons, and The Onion. Again, I can only speak for the SoCal ones.
I mean I see stereotyping comments to asians in those. And i am sure the commenrs relating to violence arent free of a racist foundatin either. I know the ones in my are based on racual issues. Many of the other areas have lots of offensive comments. I didn't post mine because of it.

The Chicago one is honestly just lazy (and, subsequently, offensive)- like, someone that's never been but has heard stuff on the news. Same with Detroit - that shit is gross.
Detroit is one of the most segregated cities in the U.S. It shouldn't be surprising that that map looks the way it does. It is sad. Historically black people came to Detroit in seek of a better place but ended up facing racism as chronically pervasive as the south.

So it's totes okay to label Dearborn as ISIS and parts of Detroit crack and other racially charged labels? I am not following.

Also not ok and segregation.
Most of us who are from metro Detroit are aware of the issues involving race in the region. I am just not understanding your post. The map is offensive. That's it.

Yes, I'm aware of the regional history of both cities, and how redlining and other blatantly racist practices led to extreme segregation by neighborhood.
Doesn't mean that labeling parts of Detroit metro as "crack" or "hooker", or the ENTIRE south side of Chicago as "crime" and "black people" isn't gross and offensive.
