I feel like digital music has made things more complicated instead of easier for me. I miss just taking a CD with me between home, work, my car, a friend's house...
Right now I buy/download from Amazon onto my laptop, then transfer to a folder on my harddrive so I can make playlists, then transfer to an SD card for my car stereo, also transfer to a thumbdrive to take to work, and also to my iPod for listening outside. How can I make this less work? I end up downloading songs and then not really listening to them because it's too many steps to transfer things around.

I'm an Apple girl. I use an iPod in my car that has music downloaded and ripped from CDs. The downloaded songs also go to my phone. At work I use Pandora.
My iPod either shuffles or plays songs in alphabetical order, so what I miss about CDs is hearing an album with the progression of songs as the artist intended. And consequently always knowing what song is coming up next. There are tons of CDs that I used to listen to where, still to this day, I can tell you what song comes next on the album.
This won't help you, but it's all on my iphone. My car stereo hasn't worked since 2011, so I use a small $20 Bluetooth speaker in there now.
Is there an Amazon music app for your phone that you could sync with your laptop? And then play it through your car stereo with an aux cord?
Yes, there is an Amazon music app that lets you store music in the cloud. You have to download each song to your device to play it without using data, though. I'll look into that more.

Yeah, I had to manually download a bunch of albums onto my iphone because there's no service in the subway and it wasn't done automatically. I have a 64GB iphone, so that makes it less of an issue.
I guess one day I'm going to have to sit down with a bottle of wine and upload a huge chunk of my music into the cloud and then go from there. My stuff is spread out between CDs, two SD cards, an iPod, two computers and an external harddrive. Ugh that sounds miserable, hehe.
