I'm not surprised. We were hearing about this offer they were going to make for 10 days before we saw it. I feel fine about waiting for a different buyer.

huh - why would the offer not be presented until this evening? I mean, there's this thing called email....
That said, our offer was presented via email, but the seller misunderstood that the email had an offer attached and was waiting for the email... there are stupid people out there.
Try not to feel like a jerk - you had no idea that they were in the hospital.

Eesh, what a mess.
Now, in my market, I'd never offer asking price. I'm going to haggle to some extent. But, buyers also have to be reasonable with all what you ask for, yowza! I'd want a decent escrow deposit and an understanding that if they aren't clear to close by day 60 I'm taking their escrow and walking on my happy way.
