Twin day can FRO when you've got a socially awkward kindergartner who didn't have a twin.
Hugs to your DC. Twin Day is the worst.
I do worry about how it will be when it's my two younger kids turn, especially my middle child who is very shy.
Thanks. It sucked because leading up to it he was all "whatever. I'm going to be twins with you" because he hates special dress up days and doesn't participate. But then when he got to school and saw alllll the other twins....he felt left out.
He did however find the humor in mismatched sock day because he gives no fucks about matching clothing and regularly wears mismatched socks so he called it "just a normal sock day for me!"
I'm sure I'll be irritated by all the dress up days when my kids are in school because I am lazy, but PJ day seems like a pretty easy one that doesn't require any more effort from me than a regular day.
Our school's dress up days seem made for lazy people, so I hope you get lucky . And the ones that aren't (like dress like a book character day) are few and far between. In the last 4 years, I remember:
- wearing a certain color shirt - red for no to drugs and yellow for anti-bullying - pj day - crazy hair day (which is usually just a day when the kids simply don't brush their hair and come with bed head) - crazy socks day (which is really like any other day because they are all into crazy socks as normal every day dress) - Halloween - Thursdays are college awareness days and they suggest kids wear a college shirt (and people are so nuts about their college in this town, that all kids have one to wear) - Fridays are school spirit day and they suggest kids wear a school shirt (and they get free ones throughout the year from jog a thon and other events, so you don't even have to buy one to participate in this)
DS didn't even remember to wear green for St. Patrick's Day (he was with his dad otherwise I would have mentioned it to him) and it didn't matter at all. Most of his friends were not wearing green either.
I'm a little surprised. I mean, I get not having your shit together and feeling like a hot mess (my kid's hair today...ugh!), but I would hardly think it'd be that stressful to send your kid to school in a clean pair of PJs. Why is that any harder than any other outfit?
I totally was expecting this to be about another PJ issue--I work at a middle/high school and student council organizes a few pajama days throughout the year. We sometimes have some, uhh, pretty racy outfits make their appearance at the high school on these days.
- crazy hair day (which is usually just a day when the kids simply don't brush their hair and come with bed head)
I know there is a separate thread about this, but this made me sad because of your description. My son has my hair - it's curly. But it's also short and he takes a bath at night. So every day he has a bit of bed head in the back and you're not supposed to brush curly hair, so the rest of his hair is just however depending on whether he had a bath the night before and how much curl cream we got into his hair before he ran away.
But I love his hair and think it's so cute and like that it seems to be getting curlier the longer it gets.
So your "crazy hair day" is my kid's everyday, and I'd hate for him to feel self-conscious of his hair because of these days.
This "twin day" also seems to be problematic.
So until schools can recognize all the ways in which these days suck, I think they are better off not having any or sticking to universal themes (green for earth day, red for no drugs, etc.). As I said before, we have plenty of days already occurring pretty frequently throughout the year.
My son also has my thick curly hair and no matter how I cut it, he has a weird part in the back because of night shower and going to bed with damp hair. Unfortunately, unlike his bff, his curls are unruly and uneven. So he doesn't like it. Most days he wears a hat - he has to take it off during class but can wear it at recess and lunch. And then he blames "hat head" for his weird matted curls in the back. So on crazy hair day, he loves it because he can embrace the curl

@littlemoxie - have you tried surf spray? It sprays in which I find easier than a creme and it seems to work. I use it on my hair, too, when I don't blow it out.
I'm not a fan of theme days that require parents to buy stuff. Pajama day falls kn that category for me. Sure nobody is required to wear cute character pajamas but it sucks being the kid in a t-shirt and sweats when the other kids have matching character sets. I also think it puts extra pressure on parents because nobody wants to send their kid out looking slovenly. So they either run out to buy something nice or dig through what they have to find something presentable. It
I honestly don't remember doing dress up days (besides easy things like green on St Patrick's day, red on valentine's day) in elementary school. It was a pretty exciting new concept in middle school. And by then kids are old enough to either want to dress up or not and to plan their own clothes if so. Theme days would be pretty exhausting at an age where children don't really have a concept of money, time, reality... That said, pj day seems easiest. My kids would love to not be forced into clothes. And they usually have a couple decent pair of pjs from Christmas or their birthdays. I buy most of their clothes second hand too and still manage to get stuff in great shape.
Omg, kids LOVE PJ day. Especially when it is combined with a movie in the afternoon and popcorn. It is a huge incentive for classes to reach a goal. For young kids I mean...grade 8s...not so much.
My eighth graders love pj day. Not sure why but whenever they get to choose what their reward is they pick pj day. We are a uniform school, and are fairly strict about it, so getting to wear any other clothes is a treat.

I would LOVE dress like a historical figure day.
Also our twin days, the kids get a twin and color assigned to them, so it is easy and no feelings are hurt.
Oh, and today was pajama day at school Except I realized I need to buy short sleeve pajamas. So DS1 is wearing pajama pants and a "I love tacos" shirt.
