I don't see the reason for taking the money with you vs giving it to customer service. It's not your money.
My iPhone dropped out of my pocket at the grocery store and someone picked it up and handed it in. They could have given their number to customer service I guess, but they didn't. Which was awesome since when I realized it was missing, 4 hours later, I didn't have to go to their house and ask them to graciously return it.
If I lost cash in a store, while I was out, I would never go to customer service to ask. I would figure cash is my loss. Phone, wallet, ring - I would definitely check back. But I also likely wouldn't notice for days so it would be impossible to retrace my steps. If I found it I would keep it. No questions. I would figure that it all goes around. You lose some, you find some.
I found an iPhone on my street ( middle of the road), I texted some numbers that kept calling it (from my phone as it was locked but I could see numbers I think.). One was the lady's husband and he came and got it. Turned out she threw it out the car window so he would have to buy her the new iPhone 6. Based on the texts, I think she is a bit of a princess, the Husband was nice but seemed pissed with her.
Anyway, about 2 months later I saw another iPhone on the street in the exact same place. I brought it home and could see from the texts and stuff that it was hers again so h made me go and put it back where i found it because he didn't want to deal with them again.

Also if I lost my wallet I would assume all the money would be gone from it if returned. I really just want it back because of the cards and hassle anyway.
Also - PSA- if a kid returns your wallet, give them a $5 or something to say thanks. It really makes their day.
I never said I expected to get money back if I dropped it. But to me, there is no difference to me finding $100 on the ground in a store or a phone on the ground in a store. It isn't mine and I have an easy option for how to deal with the situation.

Damn. You'd think she'd at least try a new spot the second time!
I dropped $300 in 20's at Whole Foods once. I asked at customer service and somebody did go to turn it in. They told her to keep the money with her, liability I guess, and leave her number. Turned out it was a local Nestie that I knew, lol. I went to her house and picked it up, I was incredibly grateful for her honesty and would do the same now if I found money.
I don't even know where to post an intro here! I was on TK/TN/TB since 2003, mostly local boards. I was m_and_m.
"I speak without reservation from what I know and who I am. I do so with the understanding that all people should have the right to offer their voice to the chorus whether the result is harmony or dissonance. The worldsong is a colorless dirge without the differences that distinguish us, and it is that difference that should be celebrated not condemned." -Ani Difranco
So let me get this straight. If you find the money and ask someone if it is theirs and they shadily say yes, they are stealing. If you turn it in to the store and they take it, they are stealing. But if you take it, not stealing. Again, I am not referring to the OP, but all the people who say that if no one looks like they are looking for money they are keeping it.
I guess I have too much Catholic guilt and fear of karma for that.
So, DH and I talk about this during a really long walk...let's adjust the scenario to this:
You are walking through the grocery store with your 5 year old child and find the $100 bill (as opposed to being alone). Do you approach the situation differently?
I find cash outside my apartment building all the time, I think my grand total is $131 over about 6 different finds. People reach into their pocket for their fob and cash falls out. I'm not about to start knocking on doors to see if anyone dropped it. I usually keep it in my stroller for a while in case I pass a homeless person.
