keweenawlove Please do tell! I want to get H his favorite beer but I am curious if it's no longer around.
We need to increase our savings account after being forced by work in to not great insurance anymore. Instead of dumping cash in there this month we are spending that plus more on our trip to NY. There are a few good places we want to eat and H upgraded our baseball tickets to nicer seats. Don't even care! Treat yo self!
H just discovered there are beer trading forums where you can trade for hard to find beers from other places in the country. I feel like this is not going to be good for our bank account.
I've never personally beer traded (I have been known to harass friends driving through Wisconsin to get them to bring me New Glarus) but my friend's H is super active at it. It's a lot easier and cheaper to do as a hobby if you live in a strong beer region like they do, because of the access you have to special releases and hard to get bottles that other people around the country want.
I'm hoping New Glarus will be some good trade bait because it seems like people outside of Wisconsin get so excited about it. We've got easy access to that. We also picked up some Hopslam when we were in Michigan last weekend. I should have held onto a few bottles of the Pliny the Elder scored last year!

@mnh2013 He just signed up on this website thebeerexchange.io/ You can propose trades and list what you have. He hasn't heard back from anyone yet so he's trying to see if there's a better one out there.
mbcdefg If your H is able to find some Heady Topper, I'm sure my H would love to talk to him.
Or if anyone can find Cigar City's Cedar Aged IPA, we might be able to be friends

I know he's had Heady Topper in the past ... I'll see if he has any left, but I doubt it
He's always on the lookout for Cigar City, too.
He does his trades (although he hasn't done one lately) through the RateBeer and BeerAdvocate message boards. Sometimes we make trips into NYC or Philadelphia to find stuff that he can't get here in NJ. He's traded in exchange for some good local beers, mostly ... Kane, Carton, Magnify (all in NJ), or Tired Hands down near Philly.

I'll pass those forums onto him. Thanks. I think you can only find Heady Topper in Vermont. I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this last month when I was in Florida and had lots of easy access to Cigar City beer.

Right - we went to Vermont a few summers ago and picked up some Heady Topper, and visited a few other breweries/shops as well (Rock Art, Hill Farmstead, Lawson's, and one or two more that I can't remember). He's got some friends who've been to Vermont since then and brought him back some HT, too.
I was in Orlando for a work conference a couple years ago and he asked for Cigar City, but the huge hotel was in the middle of nowhere and I never left it so I didn't get to a liquor store. But I went to Chicago the following year so I came home with a suitcase full of Three Floyds

Not only VT, but only northern VT (within some miles...maybe 30?...from where it's brewed), and it runs out at the distributers even there. I don't even like IPAs and I think it's amazing.

Good reason for me to tag along on one of DH's work trips in northern MA. He can work and I can take a little road trip on my own
We have not stockpiled any money for my unpaid maternity leave this summer. Hopefully we can cash flow it?
Our experience was that we were break-even when msniq was on ML, but in the red (which we planned for) when I was on PL. Lots of eating at home, trips to the library/playground, which helped offset costs like kid clothing etc.
But, no older kid, so no childcare/keep them entertained expenses.

We would definitely be in the red if H was taking any kind of unpaid paternity leave. He'll burn up a few sick and PTO days and work from home some days. We'll keep DD in full time preschool (better for everyone!). My salary goes to all the "fun" stuff, so we should be okay.
Besides, with DD's pneumonia/ finger injury/ ambulance ride/ finger surgery/ tooth injury/ round two of pneumonia we hit our max OOP in March-- at least all those bills will come in while I'm still working!
lamestaeever , not to be a Debbie Downer but I wouldn't be surprised if you're getting charged more fees than you realize. And funds that charge 1.25% are on the expensive side. It doesn't sound like you really need someone to actively manage money for you (and the fees that go along with that) so much as someone to lay out a plan that you can execute and then just check in with them every year or two to course correct, sanity check, etc. I know @shoegal has recommended a firm she uses in the past, but basically you're looking for a fee-only financial planner (i.e. one that doesn't sell any products or gets paid by fund providers) that can do a one-time big review and overall plan for you, and from there you only pay for advice when you want it. The initial set-up plan will probably cost somewhere between $1-2K.
Alternatively, you really can DIY with a simple portfolio of Vanguard index funds. That would be the cheapest and, many would say, smartest way to go. Here's a little bit on the concept of lazy portfolios and why they work: www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Lazy_portfolios Even simpler, you could put everything in a target retirement fund and call it a day.
Thanks for the good thoughts, much appreciated! I am definitely getting better. The first few days afterwards SUCKED but I am very much on the mend.
