Please send prayers!
One of my dearest friend's daughter is having her first baby. She was in the ER today and they said she had preeclampsia and they are doing c-section. She's only 25 weeks.
My heart is breaking.
UPDATE: The mom is out of danger. The baby has been born. He only weighs 12 oz.
24 weeks is the viability line (although, new data suggests it can be as early as 22 weeks).
If you want a positive story, check out the podcast Radiolab. They did a very recent update show on a baby born at 23w6d. That baby is a healthy 4 year old now.
Does this baby have a tough road? Yes. It is inevitably bad? No.

Prayers! I don't know exact odds, but I do know a few people who had babies at 24-25 weeks that went on to be healthy kids. It's amazing what hospitals can do for preemies.
Sending good thoughts. I have a cousin who was a micro preemie. He has epilepsy and some learning delays but is overall a healthy and thriving pre-teen.
With modern medical care, there is a good chance for a positive outcome. But it's still terribly scary, and they will likely be in the NICU for a while.
My niece was born at 26 weeks and weighed 22 ounces-also due to preeclampsia. It was terribly scary at the time, but today she's a perfectly healthy 13 year old girl. Sending prayers to everyone involved.

I was in the hospital at 26 weeks and met with a neonatologist. She told me odds are not good for a perfectly healthy baby in the long run. She highlighted common issues that arise with babies born that early. It was a frightening conversation.
Your friend has a very long, difficult road ahead. I'm so sorry she is going through this.
There was a 25 weeker that was in the NICU with us. I didn't get too many details but it sounded like the baby was doing really well. They have a long, hard road ahead but that doesn't mean they can't or won't come out on the other side. My thoughts are with mom, baby and the family. Preemies can be really tough little fighters.
Pre-e stresses the baby and causes the lungs to develop quicker. Babies born early due to pre e tend to do better than babies born early for other reasons. DD1 was born at 27w0d due to severe pre-e. She was 1lb, 11oz which was 3rd percentile adjusted for age. She's now almost 4 and 75% for ht/wt. she had very few issues in the NICU and is a developmentally typical almost 4 year old. I had a hard recovery, but have had no lasting issues. Lots of good thoughts for this mama and baby.
My daughter was born at 23w6d. There are a lot of risks at those weeks, and a lot of possibilities of things going wrong, but medical science improves every year. Encourage them not to research the odds, the risks, etc.
There will be things that go wrong, but it doesn't mean the baby can't overcome it. When I found out my daughter was having her 12th blood transfusion, I was very upset, until the nurse assured me it was normal.
Their perception of "normal" is going to change drastically. They need to be assured that's okay.
