Lawd knows my husband has a rough time here, being a white male and all. I can't wait until we move out of this place. I'm tired of people just assuming he's an upstanding citizen just because he's white.
Habbsies - tell him to smoke smoke some pot, wear a hoodie and put a crowbar in his trunk so if the police pull him over they can say he has "burglary tools."
Being a minority female married to whitey I can tell you what you said was 10000000% untrue.
i am also married to a white man. (i'm half korean, half white). life is harder for him than for me cuz i'm female and minority. your life experience has been much different than mine apparently. doesn't mean my life didn't happen.
perhaps there's local differences in customs.... i live in the bible belt. whites are known to be the devil here.
I really don't know that I have the energy to even formulate a response to this without a host of very choice words. From what you've said, it seems like you really really believe this to be true. And for that, I truly feel sorry for you.
But, here are some quotes from Tim Wise's website that I'd really like you to elaborate on:
"...according to a Century Foundation study from a few years back, for every student of color who benefitted at all from affirmative action at a selective college there are two whites with lower scores and grades than the average, but who were admitted anyway because of family connections or parental alumni status"
"...when job applicants are equally qualified in terms of experience and education, applicants with white-sounding names are 50 percent more likely than those with black-sounding names to get a callback for an interview"
"...white male job applicants with criminal records are more likely to get called back for an interview than black men without one, even when all other qualifications are indistinguishable"
sigh.... do any of you even play video or computer games?
ok, i see this is totally not the environment i thought it was. it's haters like whoever that was that vaguely threatened me that keep this myth of white privilege alive. of course you think you're not crazy when you surround yourself with only people that think like you and try to rudely eject people with another opinion or different life experiences than you. this goes beyond intolerance to serious denial that a whole world exists out there where everyone is not a clone of you and your life.
it's insulting to me that people would doubt my integrity just because they never saw that "unicorn" before. i have been honest and sincere throughout my posts. i just wanted to contribute to the discussions. what' i'd read so far looked cordial and polite conversation, sharing of ideas. maybe i should present my arguments with spontaneous profanity and hostility and defend them with random accusations against a poster's character and honesty rather than reply with actual counter arguments, facts, explanations or experiences from my own life. even if this place wasn't full of crazies, i wouldn't care to put myself out there like that just to fit in.
and dude, it's "reverse racism", not reserve. it's about as fictitious as this idea of white privilege, except there are actual rules, laws and policies in place that give the existance of reverse racism credence.

My old neighborhood in Mississippi, the neighbors checked with us when we sold our house if we sold to the "right color people". They got pretty upset when I asked what in the world they were talking about, but I assumed they meant white. Perhaps by your life experience I was wrong.
Are there programs that provide benefits to minorities? Yes. Does that mean a minority individual of some skill set may have additional opportunities compared to a white male? Sure. But that doesn't fucking matter, nor does it debunk white privilege, because it's a hell of a lot harder for the bulk of individuals in certain minority groups to get a shot at getting that skill set. That's the essence of white privilege.
Maybe you're a minority and you're husband is not, and he actually came from an underprivileged background whereas you were born into a family that despite being half minority gave you the advantages to succeed. Bully for you. Statistically speaking, that's not how it usually goes, and that again is part of white privilege.
sigh.... do any of you even play video or computer games?

Please tell me how reverse racism is a thing. Because racism is racism, no matter the skin color of the racist person.
If you are looking for people that will pat you on your head and tell you that you are right, your poor white, male christian DH is so discriminated against, this is not the board for you.
Also huge LOL at Christian discrimination in the United States. It must be so hard to make up 80% of America, unlike those lucky atheists who are the least trusted group in America by virtue of their lack of belief alone... yuuup.

Did you really try to get smart with me regarding my typo when you did the same with "existance" ? Also serious question, do you travel? White privilege is all over the western world. LOL@us all being like minded!!! Seems as if you and your GBCGBCN is the one who chooses to live in bubble. Meanwhile I asked a very serious question to you( and the other ladies) about how their white husbands have been oppressed. I got a temper tantrum from you and crickets from everyone else.

Banana, you're new here. Let me explain a little something. When you have black, white, conservative, liberal, atheist, and christian postersfrom all regions of the country all disagreeing with you, you're pretty fucking in the wrong.

Banana, can you just address this little bit?
You're extrapolating based on what you've seen, but have you acknowledged the data behind what you haven't seen?
For every case of you having to defend a firing, how many went unchallenged?
For every black man who's become president, how many never even made it to their school board?
It's called privilege because it just exists without you every seeing it. I appreciate you attempting to defend yourself, as wrong as I think your views are, but us engaging in debate goes both ways. You have to read what we say and think about it. When you present data, not just anecdote, to prove your point, we'll do the same.
I just read this, from an article on religious schools receiving vouchers. I was wondering where I should share it. This seems as good a place as any...
"The racist history of the United States is usually whitewashed or romanticized in Christian school curriculum. Writing for AlterNet Rachel Tabachnik highlighted the following in a Bob Jones text: “To help them endure the difficulties of slavery, God gave Christian slaves the ability to combine the African heritage of song with the dignity of Christian praise. Through the Negro spiritual, the slaves developed the patience to wait on the Lord and discovered that the truest freedom is from the bondage of sin.” Another A Beka textbook says, “A few slave holders were undeniably cruel. Examples of slaves beaten to death were not common, neither were they unknown. The majority of slave holders treated their slaves well.” Even the Klan gets whitewashed. A Bob Jones textbook states that “the Klan in some areas of the country tried to be a means of reform, fighting the decline in morality and using the symbol of the cross to target bootleggers, wife beaters and immoral movies.”

I just hope God can give us white people, especially our men, the gifts and ability to endure the heavy chains of oppression that weigh us down in America today.

Clearly they haven't been taught the right spirituals to bear up under their burden.
Here is my own experience with firing a nightmare employee. She was rude to customers, sloppy with her work, bragged about defrauding the state some years back, made errors that cost $$$$$, bragged that as a minority female she was untouchable. When I gave her the performance appraisal she earned, she disregarded the content and called me racist. The performance plan and coaching we put together after that? Totally ignored until the very last possible moment. Firing her required approval from HR, our general manager and corporate legal, but that's required anytime someone is terminated.
She contested it with the EEOC, citing discrimination. They asked us for our documentation. It took less than a day for them to throw the case out. The facts stood, and Washington is generally considered to be a pretty liberal (or "politically correct", as some prefer) state.
DH has run into age discrimination, but he'd laugh really hard if anyone suggested that being a white male had hurt him in society or the business world.
As someone who defended discrimination claims (and also suffered discrimination), I can tell you that it's easy for anyone except white males under the age of 40 to file an EEOC claim. However, filing and proving are two entirely different things.

This is the most important thing to take from this thread, Banana. Its always easy to say "you guys are blah blah blah" and group everyone together as a single minded "enemy", but this board is about as disparate as its possible to be and still be regarded as a community. I don't think we have any Mormons on here, and maybe no Chinese from China, but I think nearly every other race, political streak and religion is here. And if they all disagree with you? You are wrong. End of.
