I'm thinking more about possibly getting a kitty this year. Matilda still talks about her kitty and I think she'd love one. The local rescue usually has a range of ages on their website so I think we could probably get any age.
I want to avoid the super annoying kitten stage. BUT on the other hand if they are older the description often says they "are used to quiet" "want a peaceful home" etc. AKA no good for us. We'd like a playful cat who is good for kids and with a doggie.
Is there a sweet spot age where they will usually be good with kids/dogs/easygoing yet not a total kitten-asshole? I'm thinking like 8-10 months? or are they still really annoying at that age?
I also don't want an old cat, I know it's terrible but after all the money we spent on ozzy last year and such, I would rather decrease my chances of large vet bills for the near future.
I find under 2 can still be annoying lol. We got Bob at 2.5 and he was perfect. I would just keep looking, I looked for months until I saw him on the website and knew he was perfect for us.
I got my cat when she was 3 and I think she was through most of her shenanigans?
She still knocks glasses off the counter to drink the water, meows at our bedroom door if we don't leave it open for her, and is the most loveable sweet thing ever with the kids.
never. I was at my parents house last night and OMG. also, their food and litter smells= NO.
We keep Stormy's food and litter in the unfinished portion of our basement so the smell is not present anywhere else in the house or available for little toddler hands to play with.
eta: we lived in an apartment for a few months, and the smell was awful. Most of the reason why all of her stuff is sequestered.

We found a magical cat who is amazing with kids and doesn't just throw things. We got him at about 7 weeks old. But he is an unusually social and the best behaved cat I've ever had.
On the other hand, my older cats we used to have were assholes until the end. I think it's all about the cat and not the age.

yeah when we had a cat before the litter box was in the basement so that is what we would do again
I don't think animal food really smells but we do dry food so that's probably why

My cat is awesome. We found her when she was about 10 or 12 weeks and she has been the sweetest addition to our family. She was good from the get go with the dogs and Peyton. And she's great with Logan now too. She was past the playful biting by the time we got her. Not sure what else is considered "annoying kitten" stage. Haha.

This, but we got ours at about 4 months and he had been at the shelter since birth both of my really awesome cats have been black males, dunno if that matter or just my luck!
Our shelter let you bring your current pets to visit a perspective new pet to see if they get along. Maybe you could try this?

Our cat is also a black male. I had one black male previously who was a really sweet boy, too. Just not a fan of people.
We have two 8-year-old cats and the boy pees everywhere, so has been locked in a bedroom for the last 1.5 years where we go visit him. His sister gets the run of the house several times a week when we're awake, but I refuse to be awoken by cats after having 2 kids who don't sleep. These are the compromises we've made to be able to keep both cats. I can't imagine anyone wanting to adopt a skittish cat who marks often and we're not sure how his sister would do on her own.
