This is a terrible picture, but here's what our door really looks like (it hasn't been stained yet and the columns haven't been built in this picture, don't have any more recent ones where you can actually see the door--the columns are pretty big!).

Ok, PHEW!
See, this doesn't look bad to me. I do think you are letting your contractor off too easy, but glad to see there isn't a big blank box on the top of your door!
Ok, that's nothing like the other photo, which is good for you! What does the contract state about going over schedule? Do you get any kind of monetary reimbursement for all their errors?
Yep, seeing the picture I think that does look fine. I was also thrown off thinking you'd have the big transon box above the door but with no window in it.

During our planning sessions, he told us the house would be complete in 3-4 months, but the contract gives him quite a bit of time to complete the house, maybe a year or more (if delays due to unforeseen circumstances/weather, etc...), so he's not in breach of contract or anything since it's only been 6 months.
No reimbursement for mistakes, some we are just living with and some they are fixing.
I also wanted to add that I really like your exterior colours. We're doing something similar (charcoals and greys with white accents) and I really like how the white trim pops against the grey background. Is that your final door colour or does it still need to be painted?

We decided to stain the door a dark brown. I debated between that and painting it white, but after seeing the dark door on another house, it looked more distinguished!

I agree. Now that I see your actual photo, it's fine. It's actually very similar to my front door.
I also think you're letting your contractor off too easy, but I understand your reasoning. You're too nice! (ETA: If you're happy with everything, then "too nice" isn't always a bad thing!)

This and with the overhanging porch, I don't think the transom would add that much more light.
And I must confess I was confused about the black box discussion. Lol I thought the picture posted initially, shows a transom but it just dark under the porch...

The original picture I posted does show a transom, but it is pretty dark though, so I could see how people might not think that there was a window in there!
