Since Savannah's too hot in June, I'm thinking about Cedar Point in Ohio. Has anyone been? Is there anything else around that's worth visiting while I'm there? Thinking about driving thru the Hocking Hills area on the way to or from to hike some of the trails that late H and I enjoyed because I'm not sure I'm ready to head back to our favorite wilderness area yet. Planning to go the week of his Birthday because that's my last "first" and it'll likely be a rough one for me since hospice started around the same time.
I grew up about 3 hours away, but haven't been in.... 10 years? Totally worth the trip though - I have yet to go to an unthemed amusement park that has as good of rides.
I'm not sure about the surrounding areas coming up from Georgia since I was driving from the opposite direction.
Many times! There's basically nothing else in Sandusky. Are you or your kid into planes? There's the AF museum in Dayton which is pretty groovy and free. If you're taking 75, that would be not very far out of the way.
My H and I go to Hocking Hills about once a year. I can give the name of a great cabin rental place if you're interested. It's truly one of my favorite places in the country and definitely my favorite place in Ohio. All three of the pieces of art hanging in my living room are of HH locations.
Tons of water parks in Sandusky too. Also African Safari Wildlife Park is worth a visit. Bring a bag of your own carrots and there are almost always discounts on Groupon etc.
We are going this summer for the first time so I'm following!
I also want to go to Hocking Hills. wambam is it good for little kids? All I hear about it is hiking but I don't want to take a 3 year old hiking on the risk that he will throw himself on the ground and make me carry him.

I would love your cabin referral! I love cedar point! My best friend and I used to go every summer.

Hmm, I'm not really sure. My H and I love to hike and are pretty fit so we do the longer, more rigorous hikes. But we frequently see families with little kids on the shorter easier hikes. We've also done ziplining and canoeing there, but again, that might not be the best for a 3yo.
If you like coasters, that's the place to go! We stayed at Castaway Bay, which has an indoor waterpark, and it was way more fun than I anticipated. Plus, it got us free parking and early access into Cedar Point, which was amazing. We had ridden 5 major coasters with no lines before the park even opened.

It is America's roller coast. LOL
Really I love it. The Raptor is still my favorite!

We've done some day trips to Hocking Hills with the kids and it was great. Granted, I had a carrier for Caleb, but both kids had a great time. Ash Cave and the gorge at Old Man's Cave are both very family friendly. The "hikes" are more like energetic nature walks.
I LOOOOOOVE Cedar Point! I've only been once though, while visiting my ILs, so I have no other recommendations. I'd totally suggest to H that we go back this summer, but while CP is awesome, I don't know if it's awesome enough to see H's crazy, Trump supporting friends/family.
We dock our boat across the bay from Cedar Point. You will LOVE it. There are other things to do, some fun places to eat. Let me know of any questions you have. If you are coming for several days there is a Merry-go-Round museum in downtown Sandusky (that's good for a couple hours and cheap).
Take a ferry to Kelleys Island, rent a golf-cart and run around, this is a quieter island. Try the local wines everywhere you go. Take another ferry and go to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island . The cute downtown with shops, places to eat and bars is fun. Go to the top of Perry's Monument and on a clear day you can see both Detroit and Cleveland. Rent a golf cart and run all over the island. You will love this place. Stay a couple days. You can be busy or do nothing. It's a magical place. Be sure to take some time to sit on a bench in the park and relax, watch the lake/boat traffic. Go to Boardwalk and sit on the upper deck, have peel n eat Shrimp & cold beer and watch the boats.
There are other cute lakefront towns/villages nearby - Vermilion and Huron to the East, Port Clinton and Marblehead (cute shops)to the West.
Drive to Cleveland to the Rock Hall, the hands-on Great Lakes Science Museum is next door. Take in a play at Playhouse Square (several theaters), great places to eat, great museums.
One of my favorite poems and true:
If once you have slept on an island You'll never be quite the same; You may look as you looked the day before And go by the same old name, You may bustle about in street and shop You may sit at home and sew, But you'll see blue water and wheeling gulls Wherever your feet may go. You may chat with the neighbors of this and that And close to your fire keep, But you'll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell And tides beat through your sleep. Oh! you won't know why and you can't say how Such a change upon you came, But once you have slept on an island, You'll never be quite the same. Rachel Lyman Field

Cedar Pointe is great, especially if you like rollercoasters. My Sister goes at least 4x per summer. They used to have season passes and we live about3 hours away. If J wasn't scared of rides, I would go all the time too.

I've been to Hocking Hills 3 times with my nieces and nephews who were babies to 6 yr old at the time. The hikes we did weren't strenuous or long and they had fun on the hikes. We also found cabins that had small fishing ponds because they liked fishing. We also went on the train ride. It wasn't too exciting, but the kids enjoyed it.
My family always loves a trip to the Rocky Outlet store, which is in Nelsonville.

Since you love hiking so much, you should check out Dolly Sods Wilderness near Canaan Valley, WV. Not sure how far it is for you, but it was late H and I's favorite place to hike. There are a lot of cabins available in Canaan Valley.

*doing my once every few months jumping in bit*
Hocking Hills is beautiful. H and I did our (brief) honeymoon there and try to go back whenever we can. Rent a cabin with a hot tub for the best relaxation after hiking and it makes for an awesome trip. I think the name of the place we went was Comfort in the Woods.
I haven't been to Cedar Point in many years, but it was always a blast back then. Near the lake as well, so you can plan activities around that.

Cedar Point was way less fun as a 29 year old than it was as a 19 year old, lol. The majority of the roller coasters kind of made me feel like I was getting beaten. There are a few smooth ones that I love (Millenium Force, the Raptor) but holy hell, some were so painful. I also have less patience for 3 hour lines than I used to.
I actually do love Put-In-Bay, depending on the day of the week it's a drunken mess but it's a fun drunken mess.
I went through the African Safari Park and it scared the shit out of me. I'm not chill enough for a buffalo sticking it's head in my car.
This post is really making Ohio seem great! I grew up 20 minutes from Cedar Point and basically lived there in the summers as a kid. We went back for the first time in probably 12 years this past summer. It felt like home

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one, I hated the safari park. Plus it made me sad that all the animals are begging for food.
My DH has a jeep and took the top off and a giraffe stuck it's head in the top and slobbered all over us. Do not like.
