I don't need/want a barn, because that would imply I had to take care of animals. I have 2 kids and a dog. That's plenty. And a barn is one more thing to keep clean, and you have to REALLY keep up on it, or else it will get really bad, really fast. Because Nature. And Critters. And more Nature.
So I'll take that house, with the acreage, but no barn.
I love the property and the beams on the ceiling, but I would fall down these stairs a thousand times.
DH's cousin lives in farm house similar to this a few counties over. They have steps like going to the second floor but the wall comes down so low you actually have to sit and crawl into the room. It is crazy.
We have 6.5 acres and it is more than enough. I cannot even imagine 20+, although DH would love to by the wooded acreage next to us (23+) so it doesn't get sold to a builder. The guy across the street owns 65+ acres and has it in his will that it can never be sold to a developer after his death. Love him! DH also wants goats and chickens, but I am not taking care of anything else! Plus, we have a bunch of coyotes living in our woods.

My SIL lives in Quebec City in the old city, and she has stairs like that with no rail on the side. And that's the guest room. I have panic attacks every time we stay over night.
