I feel like my kids would be fine for an hour, at 10 and 7, but my state does not, so I take the younger one, even though I feel like together, they are better, and my 7 year old is well above the maturity of a typical kid for safety. The boy loves rules. I have used a 12 year old babysitter for them for less than 2 hours a number of times, but her mom was home, and lives around the corner, my neighbors were home, and I was close by. She is 13 now.
These are our DCFS guidelines for our state: Children eight years or younger should not be left alone Children between the ages of nine years and twelve years, based on level of maturity, may be left alone for brief (less than two hours) periods of time; and, Children thirteen years and older, who are at an adequate level of maturity, may be left alone and may perform the role of babysitter, as authorized by the parent, for up to twelve hours.
