I'm sad that you killed it. it's just a poor creature, living its life.
But I'm a lunatic who can't even kill a damn fly, so my opinion could be way skewed. (Literally, I capture flies and put them back outside...)
DH trapped a yellow jacket in between the window and screen the other day. It was buzzing around in there. Logically, I know it would have stung me as soon as I released it, nor was there a good way to get it from where it was trapped back outside. Plus, yellow jackets are fucking mean. I still had this weird sadness about it though.
I understand. I accidentally killed a spider the other day and legit cried. Lol. I need help.
walterismydog, isabel, you are my people. The only thing I will allow to be killed in my house are ants because when you have a bunch of them (thanks hot weather), there's really not much else you can do. But it hurts me to do it, or more accurately, let my H do it.
H has turned into a total softy since we met. Hated all animals, including my cat. Yesterday he stopped the lawn mower to pick up and bring me a toad, asking me to put him out front where he'd be safe. And today he fed the cat some cheese. I knew I could convert him.
If your H was sitting in the chair, did he feel it move under the cushion? Just curious. I will now be looking before stepping out my back door, we have snakes here too.
That snake had the same right to be there as you do. I get that it scared you, but killing it wasnot necessary. I wish people would be able to look beyond the "creepy" factor of snakes and realize the benefits of having (non-venomous) snakes around.
Pets, including cats and rabbits, should be indoors. I live in FL where alligators are abundant. I don't want them all killed because they could potentially kill my cats/dog due to my negligence. Evolve.
I'm not sure where all these wildlife control people are but we don't have those in my area. There are critter people you can call but you have to pay them to do this sort of thing, and it's in the hundreds. The only animal control we have is for stray dogs/cats that get taken to the county shelter. They don't do anything with wildlife, we've called before. I get the "don't kill" mentality but I'm pretty sure that fucker would have met a similar fate around here. I sure wouldn't pay a hundred dollars to have someone relocate it.

I live in Central FL and there are many businesses that relocate snakes, raccoons, opossums, etc. and it isn't "in the hundreds" or even close. I believe you are being hyperbolic. And you sound like a gem.

This. I called a few years ago because a skunk had gotten hit in front of our house and there were a couple of babies wandering around. I was told they don't come out for that and to stay away from them.

Its a couch size metal glider. We had a cushion on one side that went up the back and then on the bottom, H's 92 year old GM lived with us until a few weeks ago and its where she sat. We don't normally keep a cushion on it but he had put it there for her because she would sit out there for hours. He was sitting beside the cushion, not on it. My grandson was running all around and I am just so glad he didn't climb up by him. It may not have been poisonous but it still would have hurt him/scared him. I will be removing the cushion and looking under the glider before I sit out there again.

Here's how this would have played out at my house.
"Omg omg fuck fuck fuck" Then my blood would run cold and I would nearly faint. "DH - do something! I don't know, chop it's head off?!?!!?" DH would go get something sharp "WAAIIIITTTTT... Don't kill it" DH "well, what do you want me to do with it?" "I don't fucking know! Shit! What do we do" And then he would trap it and probably drive it outside of town and let it go. But we have a trap, I'm not sure what we would have done if we didn't.
Also, we had a possum problem and called around, nobody would come and get it (we had trapped it). So we dropped it off in the mountains.

Well, I spent 175.00 for the one business I could find that to remove and relocate a skunk that had fallen into our window well. So I'm not exactly talking out of my ass.

I live in Central FL as well and you have to be really careful of who you use to relocate these animals. A lot of them still kill them instead of relocating. It really upset me when I found that out.
Thumbs down for killing a snake. I'm sure I'll get flamed for that. We catch and fling. And, I'd be fearful, also. I just fucking hate it when people kill things because they're afraid and don't take the time to move them.
Oh, society. Let's kill every spider and snake. Then we'll be safe.

I know, it's sad. I have researched a ton and my H knows a few people so we use two guys on the up-and-up. My H needs to know because he has to have roosters relocated from his business.
People are different though and will go to different lengths depending on how much they care. I am the type that will probably be killed in traffic moving a turtle to the other side of the highway, which I have done numerous times this year already.

You and me both! I live near a state park and will regularly see deer out and about. My family is terrified that I'm going to get hurt one day trying to avoid hitting one with my car (thankfully I've never been in a position where I've almost hit one).
I'll PM you if I ever have any wildlife relocation needs.
Don't most areas have an ASPCA? They will take wildlife away from residences.
I like snakes. At least the non-poisonous ones.
Elsa I think the "burn it down" mentality is just a tongue in cheek internet joke for most people, right? When I say burn it down on the internet, IRL I would catch the spider and put it on my deck.
Snakes are the best. There aren't enough of them left in my area and you can tell. I want one to move in to my yard and start clearing out some of my rodents. Chipmunks, rabbits, mice, moles... have them all, snake, there's more where they came from!
I would have been scared shitless, too, but to kill it instead of relocating it or having someone come relocate it? Damn. I mean, I'm teaching my two year old not to kill ants or worms outside because that's where they live - the same goes for all wildlife, for us. Poor snake.
A few hours later, and a lot calmer - I do agree that I should have just let H throw it in the field behind us. But, I was literally thinking I was going to have a heart attack. What if my grandson had climbed up next to h and sat, I have 5 grandkids and all their riding toys are in my carport, I was panicking that it was right there while they had been right by it. I just hope no more show up, I'm in Tennessee and we have lots of them, but I don't want them right by me and under my cushions!
It is illegal to harm, kill, or remove snakes from the wild in Tennessee.
We had a snake on our back porch at our old house. There was a brick missing from the wall, and the snake went into that hole. We called animal control, who was out of town that weekend (apparently there are two officers in my county, neither were in town at the time). We were advised to call the sheriff's office, which we did. They would only come if it were in the actual house, which it wasn't.
There was no one else to call in this area. So, yeah, there's not always someone to call to relocate wildlife.
We didn't kill the snake as we couldn't get to it, but that fucker was as close to inside the house as I wanted him to be. We sealed the hole, and I do not know if the snake was still inside the wall when we did it.
I relocate spiders mostly so my dog won't play with/eat them, but roaches get the shoe. I'm in south Louisiana and sometimes they appear. Flameful or not, they get no relocation services.

Thank goodness he wasn't sitting on it and I'm glad your H is safe. I don't know anything about snakes but would have reacted the same especially with small child about.
Do snakes really sit patiently waiting for an animal control organization to show up and move them? I would assume that if I called someone about a wild animal in my yard, it would be long gone by the time they actually showed up to do anything about it.
I do not live in an area where snakes are common, so I have no idea what I would do if I found one. Probably run away and then be nervous to go outside again for months. I can't imagine killing it myself but I don't think I'd be sad if someone else killed a snake that was on my property.
I have a huge phobia of snakes. just looking at a picture of them is enough to have me start to feel anxious. We once had a snake in our house (I am in CFL as well) and I found it in the foyer early one morning after I woke up. I touched it with my toe, thinking it could be a plastic snake left out by one of the kids. I freaked when it started to slither. I woke my husband up and he grabbed a paper towel, used it to pick it up and then threw it outside into the bushes. I hate killing things. I recently ran over a squirrel in our neighborhood on accident (lots of trees and they will run right into the road, but usually turn around and head back into the grass.) I tried to swerve out of the way, but he got underneath the back of my car. I cried the rest of the way home.
