Curtis (the Aussie chef) called a dish vegetarian on The Today Show after he dumped a crap-load of fish sauce on it.
People seem to find this to be very complicated, but it's just not.
I know! Does it shit? Does it have a face? Is it made from the body of something that shits or has a face? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, it is not vegetarian. Three simple questions, people!
HAHAHAHA, I almost choked on my water when reading this. I’m so going to use those exact words the next time someone asks me what I don’t eat & just isn’t ‘getting it.’ That was awesome.
H told me that they're unfertilized, but I did wonder what that was. Looked a lot like an embryo. We get a local farm egg through WF. They're pretty good.
I've actually tried to do a lot of research on this b/c I stopped buying organic free-range eggs b/c of it! I'd always find little meaty specks inside those eggs, and not inside the plain white $2/dozen factory farm eggs. I have heard that free-range farmers sometimes allow roosters in with the hens b/c it keeps the chickens happier. Bow-chicka-wow wowww. So I was also worried the free-range eggs were actually fertilized.
SO, what I've finally discerned is this - the little meat-like specks inside eggs are most likely caused by a genetic issue that is common in brown hens (or the hens that produce brown eggs, more specifically.) A bit of their ovarian tissue can get inside the eggs. Not that this isn't still a bit gross but I don't mind this idea as much as little chicken fetuses (feti?) in my eggs. So now I crack each egg individually into a container before I cook with it and make sure there's no tissue inside.

I've never seen fertilized eggs at the store. The idea of an umbilical cord inside one of them is nasty.
As a side note, the ethical reason behind why vegans don't eat eggs is not (just) because of the miniscule risk of encountering a fertilized egg, but in part because of how the chickens are generally raised in factory farms. Additionally, egg-laying chickens are bred in a way that doesn't allow them to also be eaten as meat (they aren't as heavy-breasted.) As a result, male baby chickens that are born to egg-laying females are frequently killed.
My concern would be allergy related - at a Montessori school I worked at there was a little girl with an allergy to meat protein (and a million other things) and was a vegetarian for allergy reasons. Mind you she brought her own snacks/lunch ... but still! Scary!

+o( +o( +o( I am definitely thinking of this thread the next time I eat eggs.
I would be pissed if I found out a daycare was feeding my hypothetical vegetarian child animal broth. I mean, it's one thing if someone cooked for my kid and just didn't think of it, but if the daycare is providing is as the vegetarian meal option, you would think they would be more careful.
The weirdest reaction I have gotten to my vegetarianism is when my mom found out I won't eat animal broth. She was flabbergasted and a bit pissed that I was being so difficult.
i expect this sort of thing (to a certain extent). the whole "i make lamb" thing is a joke, but it's a surprisingly accurate portrayal of thoughts that are out there in the world. and my kid isn't a vegetarian, so it wouldn't be a huge deal for us. before we started feeding L meat, we learned that she'd been given poultry on a couple occasions at daycare. i was annoyed, but not setting anything on fire.
if i was hindu or something, i might bring down the fury of vishnu on them.
My friend is Muslim and does not eat pork. One time, my other friend was sharing a chicken salad sandwich with Muslim friend. Muslim friend kept raving about how it was the best chicken salad sandwich she'd ever had. So rich! So flavorful!
And then later my other friend confessed to me that, halfway through, she realized it had bacon in it, but she didn't want to ruin Muslim friend's temporary sandwich bliss.
We never told our Muslim friend that she had bacon. LOL.

In high school I worked at a mexican joint. Some people came in who were Muslim and asked if there were any pork products in their selection. Server said "nope, no way, you're good!" then served them black beans made with pork stock.
