How far in advance do you book?

After lurking on the Dis today, people were waiting on the phone to book their 2017 trip since rates and packages were released today.

Discounts aren't usually released until later. How far in advance do you book? Do you book to reserve your spot, and then add a package or discount when it becomes available? What if you book from a 3rd party site like Orbitz?

I scheduled our last trip 2 months out and it was great, but I'm planning further ahead for next time.

We rented dvc points at 7m exactly.

We mostly rent DVC points through Davids and I submit a request as soon as we have decided & have the money - so between 7-11 months out. We've only not gotten exactly what we wanted once. I find renting points is cheaper than any deal that may come along for what we want (deluxe level hotel, don't care about meal plans, etc.)

I have booked a trip or 2 only a few month out and used whatever deal was best at the time.

We booked ~80 days out and I was nervous during planning that it wasn't long enough.
BUT after having 1 trip under my belt now, I'd only care to book far enough out to be able to get our FPs (so 60 days). We're not big on filing our trip with ADRs - we only used 1 last time, so that's not a concern for us.

We're going to wait until 7m out and rent points. Otherwise David's charges $2/per point before that.

We're never able to plan 6+ months out due to the way H's vacation time requests work, but we've also never had trouble securing rooms and (most) dining reservations when booking 80-90 days before our trip. We tend to travel during non-peak weeks, so take this experience with that grain of salt.

The day they announce free dining is the day we book. The only reservation I haven't been able to snag is BOG breakfast or lunch (it was way easier when it was a secret =)

well... you can make dining reservations 6 months before- so i usually book a couple weeks before that, so that i can make my dining reservations as soon as they let me :-) Food is a big part of the trip for us, though... so i like to make sure we get the meals we want :-)

We just booked our oct 2017 trip today. We're going with several family members and booked 4 rooms at the poly. We are eligible for the military discount if they release it. We wanted to be sure and have soemthing booked because they usually allow only so many rooms to use the discount.
Can't wait! Lol it's the furthest out I've ever booked a vacation
