I did a study specifically about this for a statistics class many years ago. If I remember correctly, it's a lot:) Ironically, I was sober at all the raves I've been too, even though I have a history of partaking.
I had a German study abroad student who was shocked to learn this. She went to a rave and was really upset and insulted when everyone around her kept offering her/doing drugs. She said it wasn't like that in Germany. This was 16 years ago though.

I have a handful of friends who go/have gone to raves sober. I was not one of those and no one that gets fucked up at a rave is just smoking herb. I feel like you're sober or rolling hard on Molly. There's no in between, haha.
MUST be 90%+. The ones who are not are definitely NOT having a good time. Bc hello, have you been to a rave? I've been to them sober before and they fucking SUCK. And really, who is at an EDM club at 4am and NOT HIGH? Bullshit.
If I were to compare the 'rave scene' now to the scene from 20-25 years ago, the music (along with everything else) was significantly better back then. This whole commercial EDM garbage is awful. But that bubble is starting to burst - as evidenced by the company that owns most of the larger EDM festivals in the US declaring bankruptcy. If you want to experience better music, Europe is the place to go. I'd say that now, it seems about 50/50 in terms of who is sober at a party and who is not. I've been out at 4AM sober, but I also DJ, so it's a bit different I guess when you are out working or networking. I've come across average partiers out that are completely sober too though.
For sure most. But I knew a few guys in college who raved and were pot heads exclusively. The very thought of a rave is making me break out in old lady sweat lol.

The one "rave" I went to I was only stoned and the only amusing thing was watching people rolling and dancing with pacifiers and glow sticks. We didn't stick around long. Lol. Oh and everyone was so sweaty.
well who's the DJ and where is the rave? I can't do hallucinogens but I would go and just drink if it wasn't like a sketchy warehouse scene. If there is public transportation I say only 50%. If it's in a remote location closer to 70%.
My friend dragged me to a rave DJ outdoor thing once (Steve Aoki), I was in town visiting for a funeral and I guess she wanted the distraction. I'm pretty sure I was the only person in the field not on drugs. I guess people on molly are concerned about staying hydrated so everyone was carrying water bottles around. At the end of the night as we were walking out, the entire field of grass was just crushed water bottles. Thousands. I had the worst time and felt really old, lol.
No wonder you had a shitty time....Steve Aoki plays shitty music. And throws cakes to draw attention away from the fact that he plays shitty music. All those EDM guys play shitty music.
If you want to have a good time or hear good music, go see Carl Cox. Or go to the mixcloud website and listen to his DJ sets - I guarantee the music is a million times better. I'm so sad that he's retiring soon because he really is a class act.

I saw Carl Cox and Derrick Carter at a party in Milwaukee in '99 (I think). It was the best party I've been to...Sandra Collins might've been there too, but I'm not into trance, so I didn't listen to her set.

Derrick Carter is the man! Such a good dj. I don't know if Sandra Collins really plays out much anymore....she had a reputation for getting too drunk and wasted before gigs to the point where she couldn't even play. Maybe she still plays out, but definitely not in NY. Carl doesn't really do club gigs so much anymore either outside of his Ibiza residency (which is ending this year whomp whomp) - just big festivals that he sponsors with his 'Carl Cox & Friends' tour. I've met him a bunch of times...super nice, super humble guy.

Fair enough. I can see being stoned and people watching as a fun activity there.
I was one of the people you watched with a pacifier and glow sticks. Lol.
I'd guess 70% are rolling, falling down a k hole, tripping, shrooming, or otherwise fucked up. It's been 13+ years since I have been to one, and I have been sober at a couple.
Last show I saw was a dnb one in Chicago. Can't remember my last rave.
My H is also a dj. He prefers dnb, while I liked to dance to progressive house.

He did throw a cake on a girl. I was like what the hell is going on, but she seemed very happy to be chosen lol. It could have happened to more than one person but my memory is clouded in boredom and wishing it would be over soon.
Steve Aoki is a running joke in the industry....the below article is satire FYI
Steve Aoki Gig Cancelled After DJ Burns “Press Play Finger” Throwing Hot Pancakes
EDM jester Steve Aoki has reportedly suffered third degree burns to his hands after attempting to throw hot pancakes at a group of unsuspecting passersby in a London shopping center.
Aoki was believed to be in London finalising a summer residency with representatives from Ibizan club Pacha when he vaulted the counter of a pop-up pancake stall and attempted to grab the flat batter cake straight from a hot plate.
One eyewitness explained his view on the events, “I was just after buying a lovely pancake to celebrate pancake day, just a little squirt of lemon and sugar for me, I’m not into any of that fancy modern stuff like strawberries or chocolate.”
“Next thing some crazy long haired bloke dives over the counter and starts grabbing at the hot plate,” continued the source. “Judging by the screams he must have put his hands straight onto it, you could actually smell the flesh cooking, it was kind of like bacon and actually gave me a bit of an appetite, I just wasn’t satisfied after the pancake so I went and got a bacon sarnie.”
According to Tim Baker, the pancake stall attendant, the hot plate was working off a temperature “in and around two hundred degrees celsius”.
“His hands must be fucked,” claimed Baker. “I got a couple of nasty burns on my arms and I only glanced the hot plate but that clown actually had both hands flat on it. He must be thick as a bundle of planks because he didn’t even notice the pain straight away, his hands had actually fused themselves to the plate before he started to scream.”
“I had to physically pull him off the hot plate before he jumped over counter screaming and dived straight into the fountain across the way,” continued the unperturbed pancake chef. “Serves the prick right, the next five or six pancakes I made had little bits of his hands in them and I had to sell them for half price.”
Aoki’s luck didn’t get any better after charity workers accused the Miami born producer of attempting to steal pennies from the “wishing fountain” and verbally and physically assaulting them before security staff arrived on the scene.
Aoki’s management also commented on this afternoon’s events, “Steve is in a stable condition, his hands are pretty badly burned but he’s rich so he’ll be OK.”
“Although he said he’s going to stop throwing cakes, it’s just in his nature and he finds it very hard to pass up any cake throwing opportunity. We’d like to apologise on his behalf to anyone who was affected by today’s incident in the mall.”
