1) How painful was it and how do you normally handle pain? I am a huge baby about pain. How would you rate it on a pain scale? Be honest with me.
2) Do you ever have any regrets about getting tats? Do you think you will ever get sick of having them?
I am considering getting either a favorite quote on my inner forearm or some sort of mountain design on my upper arm. But like I said, I'm a huge pain baby and have never done anything this permanent (I don't really see ear piercings as all that permanent since I could let them close up).
I think tattoos are beautiful and lovely on other people, but I'm scared. What if you gain or lose weight? Does it change the shape of your tattoo and make it look weird?
Not even sure where to get started, and it's something I probably wouldn't do right away but just tossing it around.
I am about to head out the door for a bit, so I may not respond right away, but I will definitely be reading all responses. Thanks
I got mine in 1996. I remember the skin feeling as though it had a sunburn for a few days after. Mine is on my lower back, so the actual tattoo wasn't that painful. It has not changed shape.
I did position mine so that it is not easily seen by others.
My H has tattoos on his upper arms, and he has to keep them covered for work.
ETA: No regrets. I got mine right after I graduated college. It is a simple, small design.
I have a quote on my inner forearm so I can tell you it was borderline painless. It felt like dragging the end of a paper clip over your skin with medium pressure. And it only took, like, 15 minutes. I don't regret it at all. I get tons of compliments on it. I chose that spot because a) it isn't somewhere you tend to gain weight or that gets too saggy with age and b) it's meant to be something for me to see.

1.) Tattoo pain is really subjective. I generally have a fairly high pain tolerance. All of my tattoos are on my upper back, so close to bone with little tissue/fat, which generally hurts the most, but tattoo pain isn't like stubbing your toe or hitting your head. I found the repetitive shading to be more irritating than painful. The line work I actually enjoyed.
2.) I don't regret my tattoos at all, but sometimes I wish I'd placed one of them a little differently. No big deal though.
Unless you gain a ton of weight on your upper arm, its not going to look much different at all.

Pain depends on the area, honestly.
Neck-didn't hurt at all Wrists-OMG I'm dying Shoulders- Meh, not bad Forearm- uncomfortable but ok Elbow- dead. I have died. Foot- nope, this is real death. Lower back- Not awful. Lower back coverup- ok, this is awful Upper back- this tickles
Mine is on my ankle. The outlining hurt, like someone tracing on your skin with an ice pick. The coloring fill in didn't hurt at all. I got mine about 23 years ago, and it's kind of ugly and fuzzy, to be honest.
tramp stamp: not much pain, just scratching shoulder blade: honestly didn't feel much at all over hip bone: Ow. wrist: eh, sort of like scratching inside my heel: not enjoyable top of foot: next time I'll get local anesthetic first
I have 13 and don't really regret any. I always want more.
ETA I got my first at 26 and my most recent this year at 42.

I have one on my foot that I got 7 years ago and i still love it. It definitely hurt, but I didn't tear up or cry from the pain and I'm a whimp when I'm hurting lol
I'm a bit of a wuss. I have one on my hip. When they got close to the bone, it felt like my skin was being sliced open. The shading on the bone felt like a cheese grater. When they weren't on the bone it wasn't so bad. The shading was just an uncomfortable tickle.
I regret my tattoo a lot. It was an impulsive decision I made when I was a freshman in college. It has no meaning to me. I've gained about 90 pounds since then and it hasn't distorted because it is low enough on my hip.
I would say my pain tolerance is on the low side. I have 2 tattoos, one the size of a dollar coin and the other is the size of my palm. I was able to tolerate the pain for those. I felt like someone was scratching me over and over with a needle. Not pleasant, but tolerable. A few days later it did feel similar to a sunburn, totally manageable. Both are meaningful and I do not regret them.
I have 4. Here they are in chronological order. I don't think I'm bad with pain at all.
1. small one on right side of my lower back..basically top of ass---uncomfortable, but totally tolerable, small and quick. 2. small butterfly on my foot--thank god it was small because, PAIN. It hurt like a bitch..like someone was doing foot surgery without anesthesia, but then it was over quickly. 3. Ankle-- medium size (maybe 5 x 4 inches)--Pretty uncomfortable...more so lower down toward ankle bone than upper toward calf. 4. Between shoulders (maybe 6x5 inch or so)---PAIN!!! I found it to be worse and worse as time went on because he kept going over the same spots to color. I had a tough time staying still and tears actually came out of my eyes. IF that was my first tattoo, I would only have one tattoo.
No regrets except for my ankle--I got it (a lock) while i was with xh (who got a key). So yeah, it's not the tattoo's fault.

[1) How painful was it and how do you normally handle pain? -I have a lot of tattoos. Yes it hurts. I have a relatively high pain tolerance. The most painful place for me so far was the fleshy part on my inner bicep. Otherwise I agree with PP that it mostly feels like dragging something across your skin when you have a sunburn. While I've never used it, there is stuff that can help with pain management while getting tattoos- Google Hush anesthetic.
2) Do you ever have any regrets about getting tats? Do you think you will ever get sick of having them? -only regrets I have are minor ones regarding placement (since I initially wasn't planning on getting a ton more I didn't really think about how it'd incorporate with other tattoos later on). Luckily I have an awesome artist who is great at helping me resolve those issues.
What if you gain or lose weight? Does it change the shape of your tattoo and make it look weird?
-the only tattoo of mine that has gotten distorted with weight gain was actually my first one, that spans across my hips (slightly higher than a typical tramp stamp). I was super skinny when I was 18, probably 50-60 pounds heavier now. It stretched out a bit, and then I got it filled in/fixed and it's perfect again. No big deal.
Not even sure where to get started, and it's something I probably wouldn't do right away but just tossing it around.
-a good place to get started: look at tattoos online. Figure out what style you like (traditional, neo-traditional, new school, tribal, black and grey, realist etc), then start looking for artists in your area that specialize in that style. Talk to them about your ideas.
1. Not painful at all, but I have a high pain tolerance.
2. No regrets at all. I have a tramp stamp that I might get a coverup over, but I don't regret it. It just needs freshened up and I'm not all that sentimental about it.
I have 3 tattoos, a small one on my upper back that I got so long ago I can't remember what it felt like, a biggish one on my leg (it's my avatar pic) and one about the size of my palm on my upper chest. I have a pretty decent pain tolerance, and when he was doing the parts on my leg over my calf muscle, it was fine. But once he moved to over my shin, that was painful. But not unbearable. Same thing with the one on my chest. The healing part is not super fun, but it's similar to a sunburn, itchy and annoying then it's fine. None of mine have changed due to weight gain or loss, but I do pick areas that aren't usually affected by weight change.
Oh and I don't have any real regrets. My small one on my back I got at the same time as a friend of mine, and they match, and well of course we aren't friends any more. But whatever. At least my hair usually hides it lol.

Thank you for all the responses. The pain still has me freaked out but I could look into the anesthetic mentioned above. I think I will start following some tattoo artists on IG and thinking of what exactly I want while maybe summoning the courage for the pain lol.
I have a little devil on my hip. I got it when I was 18 (45 now) and I remember it wasn't fun but not unbearable either. I'm glad I got it in a place that it is not really seen. I don't think any of my work places would allow one to be seen.
It's faded a bit but never distorted. No real regrets.
My DH got one on his arm at 15 (50 now) it's supposed to be a panther but it's distorted so much we call it a muscrat, lol. When buying short sleeved shirts we try to find ones that are "scrat proof." He has many regrets.

I agree it is all subjective and it depends on you. I have stars on the top of my foot and it hurt. I don't know if I could do that again. I have a pitbull on my ribs and that hurt especially after. I don't regret any of mine and can't wait to get another.
My shoulder blade tattoo wasn't very painful. It has stretched out and faded but I got it when I was 15 so not totally unexpected. My wrist tattoo was only painful over the main artery.
About a month ago I got my first tattoo. It's really low on my abdomen/high on my groin as it's very personal to me and something I want to be able to cover in basically all situations. I still love it, lol, and while it hurt some, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated, but that could be due to placement and my nice fat layer.

1) How painful was it and how do you normally handle pain? I am a huge baby about pain. How would you rate it on a pain scale? Be honest with me.
I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I actually like the process of getting a tattoo (and some piercings), but it does feel different depending on the location. I have 24 tattoos. The only tattoo that really hurt were DS1's footprints on top of feet, though I was told he might have went too deep. It took three hours. I'd rather go through unmedicated childbirth than go through all that again. (I did get it retouched years back, which wasn't that bad because it only took 15 minutes and the artist didn't chew up the skin)
My chest piece was a sensitive spot, but not too bad. The tops of my hands are tattooed, and the area around the knuckle is pretty sensitive. Honestly, my nipple piercings hurt far worse (and only took seconds) than my tattoos. I'd rather sit through 2+ hours of being inked than the pain of nipple piercings. My right hurt like a fucking bitch. (I kind of want to get them done again after I'm done nursing DD3)
2) Do you ever have any regrets about getting tats? Do you think you will ever get sick of having them?
The tattoos I got in the last decade, no, because they have a lot of meaning. I don't regret the others, either, and some I forget are even there. Out of sight, out of mind.
I think tattoos are beautiful and lovely on other people, but I'm scared. What if you gain or lose weight? Does it change the shape of your tattoo and make it look weird?
I was 300+ lbs when I got most of my tattoos, and lost 140 lbs and they still looked great. No issues. Much to my surprise, I didn't really have loose skin issues with the massive weight loss.

Queen Mamadala I had my nipples pierced once before I had them done the last time and I would rather tattoo my full body than go through that scar tissue. You're my people.
1) As others have said, tattoo pain is subjective and it depends on the location. My tolerance for pain is alright, I think, but I HATE needles and blood. My tattoos are all linework/no shading, so I know that factors into it, but my experiences were all fine. I have tattoos on the upper outside of each of my arms, and I have two small tattoos on the backs of my legs (near achilles tendons). My arms were a piece of cake - it felt like a cat scratch on a sunburn... not the best feeling in the world, but not unbearable. I was able to sit for several hours without issue. The backs of my legs definitely bothered me more - I think because the skin is tougher there. I was glad those were small. Haha.
2) No regrets! I am thrilled with all of them. I was really happy with my tattoo artist - he did a wonderful job and really listened to what I wanted. Obviously I'm biased, but I think they're really beautiful and it makes me happy to see them. And even though my pain experiences weren't bad, I'd still think they'd have been worth it if they had hurt. It's such a short period of time, and you get to enjoy them forever.
I will say that each time, I went through a WHAT HAVE I DONE period for a week or two after getting them. I'm not saying that to scare you - just know that if you have minor freak out moments after you get it, it doesn't mean that you've made a mistake It's just surprising to see yourself in the mirror with something you're not used to on your body. But after they healed and I got used to them, I felt like they became a part of who I am and I felt like I could appreciate them more. They've also been great conversation starters with people, which has been really cool.
As far as weight goes, I've both gained and lost while having mine, and I haven't noticed a difference. However, there I have them doesn't really fluctuate or stretch much with weight. I'd imagine that other areas might not be so forgiving.
If you're throwing it around, definitely think about it some more. Make a list of pros/cons and consider why you really want it. Ask around and do some research for tattoo artists with really good reviews - many of them have instagrams, and you can follow them to see a consistent stream of their work (I found that most of their websites weren't updated with current work). If you're still excited about it and can't get it out of your head after some time passes, make the appointment!
I have 5. Both of my feet, inside of my ankle, inside of my wrist and on my hip. I think my hip hurt the most, but not because of the placement. I think it was because it was my first one, I was so nervous and didn't know what to expect.
All of the others I talked through the whole thing; I don't remember complaining about pain. It did hurt, but I have a high threshold for pain. I don't regret any of mine. I need to get both of the tattoos on my feet redone and I need to add to one of the ones on my feet (I have a tattoo for a half marathon on my right foot; I need to add full marathon to it).
I have three-one on my right front hip/pubic bone area, one on my mid-back, and one on my left side on rib cage. They all hurt, but I think the back was the least painful. Outline is more of a stinging sensation for me, whereas the shading is more bad-sunburn irritation.

I had my nipples pierced and it was the fucking worst. I had to take mine out for surgery and the holes healed before I could get them put back in, I don't think I can have them redone. Give me a tattoo any day over that.
