My 7.5 year old girl sometimes has stinky armpits! I asked the pedi and she said she's not concerned about early puberty and that this can be very normal. Now she's going back to school (no AC) and taking gymnastics and dance. I'm thinking of buying her deodorant but wondering if this is normal/safe for someone at around age 8. I don't think I started wearing it until age 10 or 11 or so. Has anyone done this for a little kid? Any brand recs?

This has been asked about a couple of times recently (so if you're able to search, you might find some good recommendations). My DD at 6.5 is using deodorant daily. :/ Deodorant....not anti-perspirant. We haven't looked for any kid/teen stuff yet, she just uses the same brand I do.
I ordered some for DS (7.5) this summer, he uses it occasionally but Ben is going to talk to him about using it daily. Between all day sports camps and the summer heat he was getting pretty smelly. I imagine the intensity will chill as he is back in school and the weather is getting cooler.

My DD needed to start wearing it during the last school year at age 7. I still have to ask her daily if she's remembered to put it on; she remembers about 50% of the time. So far the only one she's used is Lady Speed Stick and I only bought it because the purple package looked like something she'd relate to.
My 9, 8 and 7 year old use Toms. They don't really smell like BO but when they are running around in the Arizona heat they don't smell good. I have them put it on before school or sports practices.
I asked this same question for my 7.5 year old a few weeks ago after she commented that her armpits were stinky after cheer. I got her Toms Wicked cool deodorant. We also switched from kids body wash to a regular one.
I'm going to bump this post because I have questions!
My DS turns 7 in March. He's young! I wasn't expecting him to smell yet. He didn't even lose his first tooth until this week.
He's very active in sports, and while I wouldn't say it's a true BO smell yet, he is starting to smell funky after he's been running around. (I notice it when he climbs up for a hug. He's not stinking up a room... yet...!) We had to switch to adult shampoo for his hair because he's a swimmer and the kid stuff wasn't cutting it. My plan in the coming weeks was to take him to the store and let him pick out whatever adult shampoo smelled good to him / was reasonable for his hair type. I think I should have him pick out an adult body wash, too. But now I'm thinking he might benefit from deodorant?
stephm0188 I see your comment about dri-fit clothing. My DS wears athletic clothing most of the time. I wonder if that's part of it? I don't notice his cotton karate uniform smelling, but I notice him smelling when he changes back into his regular clothes right after karate!
I just had knee surgery so I'm not walking around stores much right now. Curious to know what the Toms kids deodorant smells like? I think I would prefer to order online and not go somewhere to smell stuff if I can avoid it.
Any suggestions on adult body wash that would work well on a little boy? We just took some "manly" smelling body wash out of the closet that DH never used, and DS didn't like the scent. I think it was too strong.

Thanks!
Dri-fit and athletic clothing definitely holds onto stink.
I like Schmidt's sensitive formula or Honestly pHresh, which are both baking-soda free. I find that the natural deoderants with baking soda are irritating to my skin.
Thanks for all of the feedback. I think we are going to give the adult body wash a try for a while and see if that fixes the problem. I'm also going to start washing his dri-fit athletic clothing in hot water with OxiClean.
He has very sensitive skin, so now I'm hesitant to use deodorant on him.
I must have missed the previous threads. DD turns 6 this week and I've had to scrub some of my Dove deodorant on her a few times already. I'm always giving her the sniff test and reminding her to wash her armpits with soap when she does a quick bath (doesn't get her hair wet). I was a little alarmed she had body odor this young the first time I smelled it. I have horrible memories of kids making fun of me for having body odor when I was 12. My parents came from a culture that didn't believe in deodorant and I was so scared to ask them for it knowing they would tell me I was a loser child for caring what others think. So bullying on both ends of the issue, amazing how people spend so much of their energy being cruel. I never want DD to experience any of that so I am super sensitive to this. And my nose is super sensitive to smells since my disability so I can smell everything.

If that doesn’t do it, try some athletic detergent. We wash all workout clothes and my H’s uniforms in rockin’ green athletic wash. Do a good soak in the bathtub the first time (and gag at the color of the water so gross). Vinegar in the wash in the softener dispenser also helps I find. I use the rockin green on kids clothes that end up with sunscreen and bug spray built up over the summer too.
