I'm knitting these (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tuffy-boot-socks-2) as my first foray into socks. It's slow going right now, but should my knit stitch be bulged like this compared to thug ribbing? When it's done will blocking help this? It looks....weird. This is still the first sock. Sorry so big, on mobile...

Now I'm confused HOW AM I KNITTING INSIDE OUT? IS this like the upside down? If I flip it the right way won't it then be half and half purl bumps and knit v things? I just wanted a pair of blue socks... :sob:
You're definitely knitting inside out- super common beginner issue with DPNs. I'd personally go ahead and flip it now, rather than waiting until the end- if you're not good at telling which side is which yet, it's easy to flip back and forth when you pick it up/put it down, which can lead to knitting on the wrong side (the inside of the sock in this case).
FWIW, some people do this on purpose- they like knitting socks/sleeves/whatever inside out! Again, though, you really want to be 100% solid on what a purl stitch and a knit stitch look like, though, which will come with practice.

It's not that I can't tell the difference between the two, i AM doing a knit stitch, needle behind etc, so I'm extra confused. I also couldn't tell from the image that it wasn't supposed to look like that. Lol. At least it wasn't for anyone, it's the first I've done on dpn.
Again, some people like knitting this way, for beginners, it's almost always a good idea to knit it right side out (you'll catch mistakes easier this way).

I think I can see how you are knitting backwards. It looks like your yarn is in front instead of the back. And you are probably knitting your back needle right? That would give you the purl bumps.

Flipped it. So much easier now!! The yarn was even coming from the wrong needle... No wonder I couldn't figure out how people comfortably knit with DPNs!!!

Tinked a row, still can't figure out what I did...thinking of frogging and starting fresh, maybe with baby socks first as a trial instead of adult. Lee frustration if I mess up...

Don't get frustrated! The first sock is always the hardest. Then you will get the hang of it and knit a billion pairs. Not that I have experience with that : )

I gave up and am going to try to find a pattern for baby socks I can use this yarn and needle set with. I only have one pair right now I actually can comfortably knit with. Hoping for more at Xmas. I could always work on the table runner or blanket I started. Or even the totally screwed up sweater...
Sorry it didn't work out, but don't give up! I learned to knit on DPNs by jsut knitting a bunch of tubes, then ripping them out and starting over until I could do it without even thinking about it. I promise it gets easier with time! It looks like you started purling when you flipped your sock the correct way around. Do you have a local friend who knits you could get to help you out?

Nope. I'm stuck with online. Even the shops aren't really helpful. I'm left handed, knit continental (don't know how that happened...) so I'm on my own. I was knitting with yarn in back and knit stitch, don't understand how it turned into purls. I'm ok if I knot something bigger on circulars, knit flat, it'd Judy the DPNs causing problems.
Okay, when you flipped it, you had to start holding the needles "correctly" so you'll be knitting on the right side. It looks like you flipped it and forgot to change the way you were holding it (so you kept knitting on the "inside" of the tube that was now the wrong side. Purls are just the back of knit stitch, so that's how that row got there. Again, this is very, very common with DPN newbies- don't beat yourself up, it will get easier!
I did this on my first hat. Super easy to do. Your already knitted stuff should be hanging down/towards you. Does that make sense? It's hard to explain.

Captain Catnip ... I keep thinking about this project and could this be your issue? Are you knitting with the sock top going away from you or falling towards you?
Also ... your knitting is very neat and tidy there - great tension on this, even if you did end up frogging it. Have you started the baby socks yet? I'm invested in this!

Away from me. That's probably the issue!
I have not started them yet, I have been working on other projects right now, holding off until after Xmas hoping I get more needle options! Fxc.

Yay, that's it! So you *are* knitting and not purling, but because of the way the sock is going away from you, it is inside out. In the round, the project always goes off the bottom of the needle. Easy fix!

Not baby socks, but started the Hermione socks on ravelry tonight. Fxc they turn out! I got yarn and sock size DPNs in the mail today and love the yarn too much to use for something I wouldn't personally wear lol

Still working on sock #1, but why did no one tell me how portable they are?! I knit at work! I get paid to knit! My boss doesn't care, others read, we work in a call center so between calls and paperwork we just sit there.
