I definitely respect anyone who puts in the time to do something like this. I did the Couch to 5k program, and basically the second I completed it, I stopped running. LOL.

I loved both of those documentaries. I just watched Finding Traction while I ran on the treadmill the other night.
I haven't committed to a 50 or 100 miler yet, but I probably will. In FT, at one point she says "the lows and pain are awful, and the high feeling when you finish is so short, but that's what you remember for a lifetime." It's so true. At some point during every marathon or even a bad run in the training cycle I tell myself this is the most stupid hobby and I'll never do it again. But that feeling when you finish...

Has anyone here done a marathon or even an ultra? Mad props!
Most ultra marathoners are not Nikki Kimball. She is amazing! I'd wager very few are in the Barkley league either. I ran a 50 miler this past Fall and it was really fun! NO blisters or toenails fell off. For most of us there are walk breaks, beer and every kind of food imaginable at aid stations. Plus, good company I've volunteered at a few, including a 100 miler. One guy was telling me he doesn't run much in training. He cross country ski's and uses a nordic training machine, and saves up his running for the ultra. That was amusing to me. I don't know that I'll run more than 50k again, but I'd love to pace or crew for a longer race (100k+)
kicks its the having kids part that makes it harder and more consuming. Plan to run a long run at 10am but then the babysitter cancels? Messes up the week's training schedule. Kids up 1000 times last night? makes the 12 mile run a lot tougher in the morning.
It wasn't hard to train before the twins came along. At least I've gotten same pretty damn good workouts pushing a double stroller in the last 4 years
My husband wants to do the Barkley. He has a huge man crush on the guy who won it the year they filmed it. He doesn't like flat races and prefers the ones with elevation gain. His favorite so far is Pike's Peak. Luckily he isn't into racing for 24 hours straight (so would never actually do the Barkley, hopefully) but does want to do things like the John Muir trail in 5 days, hike Mount Whitney in the winter, etc...

I've done a few marathons, and a ton of other endurance events. The only thing that keeps me from Ultras is the time it takes to train. I'm not stubborn enough to keep my head in the game that long.
So my friend that has done one and is looking to do more, he often runs from where I live out to Claremont and back. Or he'll run the Mt. Baldy trail, by running from our house to Mt. Baldy. Just as an after work run!
Meanwhile, I have to muster up energy sometimes to drive to those places. Omg.
I am in awe of ultra runners, IM, and everyone that does this type of thing. I am a runner but those distances are not anything I have a desire to run. I wish I did because damn but props to all of those that do that. It truly is amazing.
I have friends who are in their 50s-60s that have done multiple IMs in the last few years. I am so impressed by them.
I've run 4 half marathons and I've always wanted to run a full. Time was the only thing holding me back, I'm a single mom and I always felt bad asking my mom to watch my ds. Running started getting really hard about 6 months ago and then I was diagnosed with a lung disease a few weeks ago. The doctor said "unfortunately you won't be running any marathons" I think to try to lighten the situation but now I kind of want to be the first person with this disease to run one. Obviously if I can safely.

I run halfs, I ran 3 last year and I am planning on at least 2 this year. I am also going to try a tri;). I have taken swimming lessons to get to this goal. I ran one marathon, before kids, and I don't see myself running another any time soon. I like wine on the weekend and to sleep in/ that battles my running goals when 20 miles is on the docket. Maybe in the future.
I joined a run club, and the peer pressure ( or inspiration, depending how you want to see it) is huge. We have two iron man athletes, one in trading in to do a half iron man, and at least one ultra runner. I can see someone take up running, meeting other runners, and find themselves just keep pushing the ante up in miles. if you run all year long, why not keep putting goals out there?
I would love if my body would allow it but for some reason it really seems to resist running, especially as I age. I did run a marathon when I was about 25 and it was great, I'd love to do it again but every time I increase mileage I get injured.
I've mostly given up on running for now and gotten more into mountain biking, easier on the body (unless you fall of course).
But I do have a goal to some day do an IM, when the kids are older. There is a lady at my Y who I would guess to be 60ish and she does ultra runs and IMs. It's amazing. She's this little grandmother. It amazes me. I would love for that to be me some day
I watched my friend finish her 2nd ironman last month in Mexico. There were definitely athletes of all ages. Plenty that seemed to be in their 40s and 50s and one of her teammates was close to 70.
Definitely motivation to retire early or go part time in 10 years to have more time for training!
My MIL was in her 50s when she completed her first Ironman. Her husband was in his 60s. I believe they've done 3 now and they are 61 and 68. They are both so bad ass. I love that anytime there's one on TV, my DS always asks if Grandma is there.

I'm just here to recommend the book Born to Run, which is about american ultramarathoners and a reclusive tribe in Mexico who run ultramarathon distances just as part of daily life (wearing sandals).
It is fantastic-- so fascinating. Ultramarathoners are a different breed.

I was supposed to do a 30 miler last October, but for personal reasons I didn't. I did do a 39.3 challenge a few weeks later though! Half on Saturday, full on Sunday. It was so so so hard.
kicks when I ran my marathon I had a similar low key plan. I only ran 3x a week, two short runs and a long run. I also missed runs here and there even out of that and didn't stress it. I would do similar if I ever were to run another as while I love running, 3 times a week is enough for me.
Now tri training would be very time consuming I think, mainly because I too am a weak swimmer and would need a LOT of time in the water

It was actually very unhealthy for me, bc I pushed myself and felt so much guilt for not running, missing a run, etc. I noticed most (not all) runners easily get obsessed and get injured, suffer ed's among-st other things
My friend is an ultramarathoner, she is on a mission to complete a marathon in every state. There are times she has several maratons in a row

I've run two full marathons and many halfs, but running is so hard on my back that I do t do it anymore. Not even when chased. LOL. I've also done a few three mile swims, which I love, but the training is super inconvenient.
I have a friend who ran ultras and was amazingly good at it. It wore her body out though, and she had to give it up.
I had a Doctor once tell me that bodies aren't meant to run more than a 5k at a time. Not sure how true that is but I thought it was interesting.
I've also had a Doctor tell me to make 3 hard sprints down the street and call that a workout because I was guaranteed to hurt myself by running longer than that, so I take those kinds of comments with a grain of salt.

I was watching an interesting segment on the BBC the other day about how our bones, joints and joint spaces have changed through evolution. Many joint spaces have narrowed which explains why people have more aches and pains these days than our ancestors thousands of years ago. Who knows how we'all evolve in to the future!

I did 12 full marathons back in the day, and always wanted to do an ultra (maybe 50 miles though, not 100.) However I got into weightlifting/bodybuilding recently and my body is very far from distance running shape nowadays.
I did do the Goody Challenge at Disney one year though - half marathon Saturday then full marathon on Sunday.
