My gym teacher made me run the half mile while on crutches. I'm pretty sure he would have laughed if I wanted to get out of exercise for my period.
And I think it's kind of awful to tell young women to not exercise on their periods. I had very painful cycles and regular exercise was one of the only things that helped.
Did we have the same gym teacher? Mine made me run a mile with a dislocated knee. All because the fax hadn't come in from my doctor's office. I had the giant knee immobilizer, crutches, no more cheerleading, but sure I'll hobble the mile bitch. I got halfway through one lap the entire class period (40 mins). I still hate her.

No, we didn't get to sit out. And honestly, and I know it varies from person to person about how bad a period is, but I think this just perpetuates the stereotype that women can't function for part of the month because of their period. This is why you still here people think women can't be in positions of power because "what if she gets her period??"
Yes, girls at my high school did this occasionally. Of course some did it every month because they hated P.E., but most were good about only skipping when they had really painful cramps.

We had a male gym teacher. We had two days a month that we were allowed to sit out of p.e. with no consequences, and could read a book or whatever. Any more than that and we had to write pages, instead of doing whatever we were doing in class. He never asked why we were sitting out.

There were no "wanna check?" comments though. Ew.
Yeah the "wanna check" was super gross, a friend of mine really loved attention and challenging authority, she pulled that on the regular to make our or teacher uncomfortable.
I agree it sounds like something out of the 1950s! I can't believe it was a thing.
We were able to sit out of swimming for our periods. Since we had multiple PE classes per period, we just went and participated with a class that wasn't swimming that week.
I wish I could have gotten out of gym. I used to go to the nurse once a month and lie on a cot with a heating pad because the cramps were so bad, but we were only allowed to stay for one class. Then it was Tylenol and back to your next class.
