Yes. This article was so spot on.
I've hated her forever. Dating back to the phony "What? Meeeeeeee?!" thing she did every time she won something. Bitch. You're as fake as they come. Stop it nobody believes you're humble. And you're hardly a victim. STFU.
On the same topic... one of the male hall monitors who works at my school is completely obsessed with Taylor Swift. He's in his 40s at least. His office is covered in her pictures. It's frightening. He also believes Hillary Clinton is actually the devil in the flesh, so...
Anyway.
Taylor reminds me of every mean girl I grew up with. They would antagonize people or just straight up lie about people to make themselves look better and then act all doe-eyed innocent like they didn't understand what they did wrong and why does everyone hate them? Wahh wahh wahh.

I have always been vocal about my disdain for her. Every time an award show was on, friends would wait for my first snark on Taylor. It was a running joke that I couldn't quite put my finger on why exactly I loathed her, but I did. I enjoyed the backlash from the Kim/Kayne fallout and the fallout from the Calvin Harris/Katy Perry story in real time but seeing (reading) it all like this was just, "yup, that's it!" And I feel pretty damn stupid that I couldn't figure out what was off about her for me. It should have been extremely obvious.
I find it interesting that according to this article we are seeing a shift in her persona again, one that's edgier. I'm wondering if it isn't aimed to be like KP? She is just an asshole so I can only hope she stays away from the spotlight but I highly doubt that will happen.

I don't have time to read the article before work today or at work but I will read it this weekend.
I just wanted to add that she is the worst yay females person ever. She makes her money on being this girl power, girl squad etc person but when it comes to speaking out when it matters and could piss off hier Donald trump fans, she's as quiet as a mouse.
I saw this headline the other day and was all "boom, nailed it." I could never quite place why she annoyed me so much beyond the fake persona stuff. And the fact that she isn't all that talented, but her Daddy sure is rich. Truly the Betsy DeVos of the music industry.
I didn't really think about her much (due to her severe mediocrity) until she went on that tear about how meeeeeaaaannnn Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were to her at that awards show. I have no appreciation for people who can't laugh at themselves (or in her case, her life's work as an empty PR vessel).
I've never really paid any attention to her (or pop culture generally). But after reading that novel, God, what a whiner. She really likes to constantly punish her exes doesn't she?
ETA: Also, I still don't understand the thing with Kanye. Basically, he recorded the phone call, Kim eventually released it and it proved everything Kanye was saying? Is that the gist of it?
Yes, she cultivates an image of "fragile white girl" where she is always the victim and she just loves TOO MUCH and is always broken hearted but she bounces back because blonde hair!
I have never really been a fan of hers - first, I don't think her music or her persona has changed since she first became famous, what, 10 years ago? Her music is a little less country and a little more pop, but her songwriting has not advanced in my opinion. The wide-eyed "omg I cant believe I'm here!" expression she wears constantly is annoying.
And no one cares that she writes about breakups. People care that she victimizes herself. Someone brought up Adele - she writes about breakups, but she is usually not the victim. Stevie Nicks likes to write about lamps and doves and shit, but her best songs are breakup songs. And she is never the victim. So it's not that she writes about breakups.
Finally, the Kanye thing was the last straw for me. I am not a Kardashian fan, but Kim K posting the receipts for that was probably the best pop culture moment of the last two years for me. Well, until Beyoncé got pregnant with twins.
I was thinking the other day how I manage to be just outside the age demographic for the hottest new music act. I was in high school when Hanson came out. College for Britney Spears. My late 20s when Taylor Swift became well known. Thank God for it.

I've always disliked her. Her songs are the worst, how could they be considered inspirational for little girls? The lyrics make me cringe. She always seemed phony as well. I found it hilarious when she dated in the Kennedy family and was all hurt when he broke up with her. She must have really thought she was going to marry into that family. I think she even bought a house near them. She's delusional and calculated. I'm glad her antics were exposed, just a bit disappointed it was done by Kim.
people are so willing to look past the transgressions and generally shoddy behavior and poor character of a person who is encased in a pretty white blond girl shell. Can you imagine a black female celebrity trying to behave that way and everybody being all ... it's cool though, poor girl she sure has been through a lot. I mean a LOT. Almost .. suspiciously too much .. but no no, lets not doubt her! look at her hair. It's so pretty
Her whole career has been this weird performance art. It's not the songs, the videos, the performances--it's the "character" created that has been printing money like mad. As much as I do hate on her, I also wonder who all is pulling the strings on this puppet.
Did some creep evil genius see a 14 year old girl with blond curls and thought "here it is, let's do something brand new..."
**** Can I make a prediction? In 5 years, she's going to go all big-eyed back to country music and be all "everyone in pop just wanted to tear me down. This is home. these are good people. This is where I belong. Y'all are the best!"
Yes yes yes to all the white fragility, damsel-in-distress comments. She has truly made being a victim an art form. But on top of the weird relationship stuff, she always struck me as that friend you are always on eggshells around. I know she prances around with her "squad", but I bet they all know damn well that the moment they get on her bad side, their social lives are over. She's manipulative and definitely the one pulling the puppet strings of everyone in her life.
I never paid much attention to her but even I noticed she talks an awful lot about her heartbreak with one famous guy after another and she's always coming out of it the pretty innocent little thing that needs saved. She might have not come up with it all by herself but she sure is playing along convincingly.
Also I hate that this sort of attitude is a role model for young girls. The last thing girls need is to be taught to be the victim.
I read this last week and thought it was bang on. There was actually another article years ago about that "Fifteen" song that was a total eye-opener for me (I liked her at the time) and I've disliked her ever since. Fake ass.
I don't even have to read the article. My Taylor Swift hate is strong and it started with every song sounding the damn same and her face not being able to move. All the other stuff just made me feel like I was right.
I seriously felt like I failed as a parent when my daughter was singing shake it off.

Anyone want to bet?
That, plus she'll have a big, poofy wedding splashed all over the covers of People and Us, then she'll settle down in Nashville with her husband and pop out a couple of babies so she can swoon over them and "relate" to other moms.
"Swift is clearly rejecting the traditional femininity and victimised posture she’s occupied for so long. She’s all about narratives, and the reinvention of her image is the start of a new one. The question is, however, after being exposed playing the victim in plain sight for over a decade, will anyone believe it?"
I don't think she is. She's reworking her "image", sure, but I think she's going to continue to play the victim and be all "mean people in the industry made me do it" blah blah blah. She's been in the victim role for so long she's not capable of being anything else, regardless of what she's wearing or who she's hanging out with.
I haven't liked Taylor Swift since she first broke into country music and they were branding her as a cute little, small town farm girl, just like you, girls in middle America.
She comes from a long line of bankers. Her dad was a stockbroker. It was a Christmas tree farm that he bought for funsies. He put a large chunk of money into a junk ass label to get her signed.
So basically, she's like the Donald Trump of music.

I think it's really telling that Kanye and Kim had the foresight to record that phone call. They knew what shit she'd pull.
Also, I got sucked into an internet rabbit hole about her "squad" not too long ago that talked about how most of the girls don't really even know each other, they just get rounded up when she needs to seem like a relatable "girl's girl".

I could never put my finger on why I disliked Taylor Swift so much before the Kim/Kanye thing, but that really did it. It was definitely "mean girl in high school" and this is why children should never be famous. Their development gets stalled out because so many people say "yes, yes, yes" to them and they never really grow up.
And really, anyone calling her an icon should branch out a little. Her breakup songs sound like they would work best for middle schoolers who break up at the end of the school year and while other female artists have capitalized on their heartbreak, they don't tend to be "woe is me, I'm the victim again!" in every.fucking.song on every album after every big break up?

Totally random - but do you know which tree farm it was? When she lived in PA she went to the high school next door to mine. One of my mom's best friend's sons went to school with her.
They are...bemused by this whole thing where she became famous. Her mom is apparently nice though.
I never paid much attention to her one way or another. I thought a couple of her songs were catchy, but they're not really my thing. I always found her break up shtick boring and contrived, now I find it clichéd and offensive. She really is Darth Becky.

I admit I have loved some of her songs, but the Kanye thing did it for me. She is nothing but a liar and will throw anyone under the bus to make herself look better.
