I'm a chemical engineer. People usually react with some kind of, "you must be really smart." I think most people have an elevated opinion of the intelligence of engineers. Some are really smart and some are not.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I'm an accountant as well. When I worked in public, people would ask me tax questions.
Now I'm in private, and work for a larger company. When people who work here find out which department I'm in, they always ask me if I can cut them a check for $1,000. Always $1,000. Is that some magic number that they think is worth it? Or maybe they want to buy something that costs $1,000. I've never figured that out.
People are often surprised when I say I'm a lawyer. I'm not sure how to take that, but I guess I don't "look" like a lawyer? When I say I'm an environmental lawyer, it's usually, "that must be interesting."
I don't know why "Oh wow" is always the first reaction. But that is almost always the first thing people say. I guess my industry (translation) isn't exactly super common. Or I suppose people I'm just meeting don't know I'm bilingual.

"Ooh, did you have to take that big test I keep hearing about?"
or
"How much do you think I should be putting away for retirement?"
or
"Do you know <insert name here>?"
or
"WOW, you must make a lot of money!"
I work in rep/field support for a massive financial firm with over 50k employees in the US alone. I cannot give out investment advice because, no, I have not received any of my licenses (the big test they ask about). Plus, even if I did, I STILL couldn't give you any insight.
I'm an Investment Accountant. I'm glad I'm not the only accountant here that gets asked about taxes and if I'm busy in April. I also work for a company with 30,000+ employees and get asked if I know so-and-so. Unless they are in Investments, no, I don't know them.
::blank stare:: I work on global payroll. Clearly it's an inspiring job.
The only exception to the above is when people recognize the specific company I work for and they ask for details on the executives. I have had people ask me everything about dirty divorce details to "they must make TONS of money, huh?" Yeah... not divulging ANYTHING that could get me fired. TYVM
