I just finished Beauty and the Beast Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly. I came across it because I love her earlier books (not her recent mermaid series, she seriously veered off there) and I sometimes search to see if she has written anything else.
Disney commissioned her to write it, and for the first 2 chapters I thought it was the same exact Beauty and the Beast tale, but I really liked the twists and extra stuff that didn't completely change the story. It reminds me of how Maleficent was to Sleeping Beauty.
Someone Could Get Hurt: A Memoir of 21st Century Parenthood - 3.75* Written by a dad, it was hilarious (I woke H up laughing in bed more than once) and honest.
An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin - 2.75* Meh. The writing was decent. Story was ok - is about NYC and art culture with a bit of mystery. Had a love/hate relationship with the main character.
Animal Vegetable Miracle - 2* Loved the premise but had a sanctimonious feel throughout. Glad it's over!
I Hate Everyone, Except You by Clinton Kelly - 4* Loved! Super funny and went by too fast. Highly recommend the audio version as he narrates it!
This week I finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (good, and bittersweet just like the title), and The Stone Mattress (mostly boring, I only liked about 1/3 of the stories). Now I'm working on the second in the Raven Cycle, The Dream Thieves, while I wait for my next book club books to come in from the library.
QOTW: My BFF convinced me to read HP when we were in college - it was just before the 4th book came out. I was convinced it was going to be some stupid kids book, but I needed some fluffy relief from accounting and engineering texts. I plowed through the first three she lent me and then immediately bought book 4, before going back and buying copies of 1-3. I was significantly less pleased when she tried to do the same with Twilight, which is a steaming pile of shit (but I expected it to be a steaming pile of shit and was proven right, so it doesn't answer your second question, LOL!).
I was really disappointed with The Picture of Dorian Gray. The premise is so good, and the synopsis makes is sounds like it is this fast paced, salacious bit of naughty awesomeness, and it really it is slow and so, so boring.
