If you lived in a HCOL and wanted MCOL or LCOL - where?

H and I want to move to the west coast, but I can't figure out a place where we won't be poor. I think we'd love northern CA if we could afford it. We do want to live in a city so that eliminates a lot of the more affordable options. 

No, farther north. Sac is great, but Roseville is where I frequent for shopping. The Roseville/Rocklin area is really nice, but more expensive than where I live. Its about an hour south of me. But a fast hour, its mostly freeway.

We moved back to Richmond (having lived in DC, Philly, and Memphis) and love it. It's changed dramatically in the last 10-15 years.
