2chatter- no, but that wouldn't bother me. As long as she's getting the message that books contain these awesome stories you unlock by reading, I'm happy. I'm frankly just surprised they are doing chapter books already.
I remember reading "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" in first grade and feeling so furtive. Like my first grade teacher didn't realize there was contraband on the bookshelf.

I started reading to my dd at that age. We did Ramona and Stuart Little and Narnia books and that kind of thing. They have pictures and a lot of times we would only do a few pages or half a chapter. Sometimes it would take us a couple months to get through a book. We have been working our way through the Ramona books and they are still her favorites in 2nd grade at 7. I don't think she will be ready for Harry Potter for a while though and I want to wait until little sister is older as well, so I'm thinking not until she is 9 or 10.
I've been thinking I might try reading Little House in the Big Woods to DS sometime in the next year.
I read this to DD when she was 5. Actually I think it was on the prairie. She didn't seem to pay much attention but when they thought the dog was drowned she perked right up!

We are reading our way through Roald Dahl books. Some she is more attentive to than others. I still think it's worthwhile and I am less annoyed (mostly) by what I have to read her.
