Hi crafty folks! I need some advice on how to alter a too-small costume.
I got a one-size-fits-all dragon costume for my boyfriend, and I knew it would be on the small side when I bought it. I just wasn't sure where it might look awkward. My guy is just under 6', but has a belly. I'd say he's around 270#.
Well, it zips up ok, but it gives him the most magnificent moose knuckle in bright red velour. Besides the discomfort, it's REALLY obvious and your eye just naturally gravitates down there.
Is there any kind of simple alteration I can make to the crotchal area to give the boys some breathing room? Aside from just cutting a hole and letting it all hang out? I can perform pretty basic things with my sewing machine (thread it, follow a pattern designed for children, etc) and feel there has to be a simple solution that I'm not qualified enough to discover.
Thanks in advance!
ps...it's not returnable, and there are no other sizes. I got a great deal on it and mostly wanted the headpiece anyway.
Can you PIP the costume, or link it? I don't need to see a pic your him in it though lol. Maybe see if you can let out he shoulder seams? or add an extra bit of matching fabric somewhere in the torso that won't be too obvious?

Could you maybe split it in the crotchal area (LOL, is crotchal a word? I know there's an actual word I'm looking for here...) and add a little more fabric there as a gusset, where it won't be obvious? Here's a link that might help: fashion-incubator.com/adding-a-gusset-to-pants-pt1/
A gusset should do the job- it's cool if he has fluffy butt in that kind of costume.
If there's enough extra fabric in the crotch (front to back) seam, you might be able to let it out enough. Even moving the seam out half an inch might make enough of a difference.
Would he be open to losing the foot covers? You could steal fabric from the foot covers if you need to enlarge the gusset to reduce how noticeable it is if there isn't enough seam allowance to just let it out a bit.
