4 months on the dot with oatmeal and purées. The paediatrician gave us the go ahead and she was trying to steal our food like her life depended on it. She was also an EBF bottle refuser so this gave DH a chance to feed her and gave me a longer stretch so I could do nights out with friends.
6m though with this next one we will start earlier. DS has allergies and his allergist recommends starting #2 earlier (he said 4-6m is the current recommendation).
We just started with DD last week (she was just over 4.5 months). We just puréed one of our veggie sides (braised leeks) and she’s definitely a fan. She has started sleeping better but not sure if that’s just a coincidence.
Our ped was pretty adamant about nothing until 6 mo, and skipping over cereal and heading straight to vegetables. We did homemade purées, but progressed pretty quickly to chunky stuff, and we're going to play around with finger foods this weekend (7.5 mo).
I think she would have been physically ready (sitting up, showing interest, etc) a little bit before that, but the 6 mo synced up with the research we had done & what we were comfortable with, so we went with it. No real restrictions after that. (No waiting on PB, eggs, etc. They encouraged us to offer the allergy stuff early on.)
We've always waited until 6 months and skipped rice cereal. We went straight to veggies. That is what we will do this time as well. Our pedi told us we could start with DS at his 4 month appt but I just don't feel like he is ready.
My twins turned 5 months this week and I don’t think they’re ready just yet. One is still a little bit wobbly with his neck strength (which we’ve been working on in physio & craniosacral therapy for months) so I’d like that to improve first, and neither of them are really showing signs of readiness. We’ll probably try at 6 months.
They’re formula fed now but I have about 30oz of breastmilk in the freezer, so I plan on making their cereal with that so we can use it up.
We waited until 6m and started with purée. DD is definitely not a fan in general. She likes mum mums that she can feed herself, and she likes puffs but her pincer grasp isn’t very good yet. The only way to get her to open her mouth for a purée is to trick her by showing her a puff. She still has a tongue thrust so purées just get pushed right back.
I’m thinking she would do better with BLW but I have no idea what I’m doing.
We started at 4m with oatmeal for reflux issues. Not sure if it helped because we started meds at the same time. DS ha lagged with gaining weight due to reflux, so it was part that and part helping reflux. We started veggies about 5mo.

We had good luck with finger shapes and also noodle shapes. So if you have a spiralizer (or an awesome grocery store that sells zoodles)—you can steam some of those and let her go to town. We did that and big batches of very steamed or roasted veggies cut in finger shapes. Chunks of slippery stuff like banana or avocado you can roll in a bit of baby cereal to give them traction.
My only BLW advice would be to watch a few videos about choking vs gagging so you feel confident. A bit of gagging/coughing is totally normal as they learn.
