I need help. My skin is still so dry and flakey. I'm not using any acids at all and trying my best to moisturise but my normal makeup looks awful. Can you give me your suggestions for products to use for dry/dehydrated skin? TIA!
Update: I've added a few/changed a few products in my lineup at night and day and I'm happy to update that my skin is a lot better. I've even been able to add the azelaic & lactic acids back into my routine once a week (I'll build back up). Squalane oil as been the biggest savour I think.

I really like argon oil, and at night I'll even layer it under a heavy moisturizer. Origins overnight Drink It Up mask it also great and I use it once or twice a week.
My forehead has been really dry so I've been using a few drops of squalane under moisturizer and it has really helped. I use Dermalogica skin smoothing cream for day and their age smart rich repair at night. I also use marula oil if it's really bad. I also like Peter Thomas Roth Cloud Cream and serum but am not great about using those consistently since I already have so many steps in my routine.
Oil. I prefer marula oil but I really like Josie Maran Argon oil too. I mix a few drops into my night moisturizer and also pat a little on my undereyes at night and around my nose and forehead if I'm feeling really dry. For day I pat a little oil again around my undereyes and nose and that helps my makeup from looking cakey. Adding a drop or two to your foundation can help too or getting an oil based foundation. I also like the Origins drink up mask a few times a week. For a really heavy night cream I'm liking the CeraVe moisturizing cream. The one that's a tub and it's more of a body cream. It's really thick feeling at first but then it like felts onto my face and feels amazingly moisturizing. It's one of the few moisturizers that I still feel on my face in the morning. It also calms my skin if it's feeling irritated. It's too thick for day use though.
I layer up before bed and it seems to really help when my skin is getting dry. My usual is the hylauranic premium lotion stuf that I can't think of the brand right now, a shitton of an argan oil blend and then a heavy shea butter based cream on top. My favorite for the final layer is this www.naturerepublicusa.com/products/shea-butter-ultra-steam-cream
Hyaluronic acid every night in the winter. (TO) Facial oil (I like either TO's Squalane or Virgin Marula) layered under a night mask (Laneige water sleeping mask or Too Cool for School Pumpkin sleep pack)
If you are open to supplements - i started using this a few months ago after a friend recommended. I've continued to use it and I have noticed I don't get dry patches from acids like I used to it. Even when I use them on back to back days which I could never do before.
When my skin has been it's driest I've used Tarte's maracuja oil at night and it's been great.
ETA: i had a friend who was having horrible issues with chapped facial skin and she started putting aquaphor on at night as a moisturizer
From what I have read, this is more of an occlusive than a moisturizer. You put a good moisturizer on and then the aquaphor and it seals it in. Pretty genius.
Vitamin E oil. Seriously. Make sure to get a natural version (there's a synthetic version you should avoid). Obviously it's sticky as hell and should only be applied at night, but it works. And it hasn't made me break out.
Another good moisturizer is CeraVe Healing Ointment, in the blue bottle.
For me, the key to figuring out how to treat my flakey skin was to understand the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin. My skin gets drier in the winter, but a sudden flare up like you describe suggests dehydration. Dehydration is a problem for me when I've been traveling, eating like shit or drinking more alcohol than normal (like during holidays), or subjected to a lot of chlorinated water.
For dry skin, Fresh seaberry oil and belief moisturizer work.
For dehydrated skin, Drunk Elephant b-hydra and belief aqua bomb. So does exfoliating then a hydrating mask.
Paula's Choice RESIST face oil (I miss it in with other products, sometimes apply directly), Eucerin Eczema Relief Cream, Clinique Super Rescue antioxidant night moisturizer, and when I'm REALLY dry, at night I top off with either a little Vaseline or a little of the CeraVe tube of ointment that's sort of like Vaseline or Aquaphor with skin-beneficial ingredients added. Also, when my skin is really dry I need to use an AHA exfoliant because otherwise my skin gets atrocious and stops absorbing the moisture from my other products.

B-hydra under Belif Moisture Bomb is pretty great, too. (I have used Aqua bomb, it seems to be just like B-Hydra...but it was a small pot not a long term thing). Spray a little water between (I have Caudalie but anything would do)
