I'm not a fan of the direction kickstarter has taken- it used to be full of innovative ideas that I didn't mind throwing money behind with the risk of never seeing a reward (and that has happened- a bunch). This stuff exists, though- it's still in pretty geeky territory, but, it's nothing new (nicely packaged, yes!).
Read the comments and updates on kickstarter- this definitely doesn't seem like a good time to jump in on this one. I really do want a laser cutter- they're fun- but, you can get a nicely done kit these days for sub $300. It's really pretty simple technology, Cartesian plotters have been around forever- but, nobody has really figured out how to make an easy all-in-one design yet (typically these include 3-D printer heads, too). I bet we see it in the next decade, though!

I peruse kickstarter a lot, when I can't sleep at night and have noticed some changes. I've only backed one thing, The Evelyn and Bobbie bra, that I'm anxiously awaiting. I hope it fits. I'm happy I got it during the kickstarter phase, as there's no way I'd but it for what it's retailing.
Re the plotter, I think this is one I'd look at from afar and after reading the comments, even more so. In theory it seems like it has great potential, but a good design and product is only half the battle. You have to have some business sense too.
Side note: I ordered a graphtec blade. I'm still playing around with it, but I like it so far.
