Hi all. Yesterday was Wesley's final lumbar puncture and bone marrow aspiration for his first phase of leukemia treatment. While under anesthesia he vomited a huge volume of digested and then fresh blood. They had to do an emergency endoscopy to find the cause of the bleeding to see if it was something they could cauterize, but instead they found multiple lesions that have probably been there for a long time and were made worse by the 4 weeks of steroids that are part of the leukemia treatment. They were very concerned about the bleeding but also worried that he had aspirated the vomited blood. He was rushed to the ICU and placed on a ventilator and given 3 ivs, a central line in his groin.
While xraying his chest to check for signs of aspiration they happened to notice that his abdomen contained air and fluid where there should not be air and fluid, which indicated an infection.
He is very very sick. They were worried they might have to do emergency surgery on his intestines last night, but he stabilized and has slightly improved. He is still sedated because of the breathing tube, but they hope to remove that as soon as tomorrow.
I know you guys are rooting for him, and I thought you would like to know. Please say a prayer or send off some good energy into the universe for him

Oh, Nanda! Sending tons of vibes and also tons of hugs! I know we’re across the country from each other, but if there’s anything I can do please let me know!
Oh NandaB I am so sorry. I am sure your team of doctors is doing all they can to find answers, help W and keep his as comfortable as possible in the process. You all will be in my prayers. Pleases keep us posted.
Thanks guys. Poor kid just can't catch a break. He is slightly better this morning, which is good, but his belly is a little distended so they are watching that closely. The nurses here in the PICU are the most amazing women and men I have met. So caring, so diligent, and they are making me feel like my baby is in good hands. Hopefully I will have a better update soon.
Thanks again everyone, also, I don't remember who suggested it in my last post when I asked for inspirational quotes but the poem "Good Timber" is really beautiful and I am thinking about getting a tattoo of the line:
The stronger wind, the stronger trees
Here is the whole poem, I really love the whole 3rd stanza, but I think the line above is the most powerful...
The tree that never had to fight For sun and sky and air and light, But stood out in the open plain And always got its share of rain, Never became a forest king But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil To gain and farm his patch of soil, Who never had to win his share Of sun and sky and light and air, Never became a manly man But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease: The stronger wind, the stronger trees; The further sky, the greater length; The more the storm, the more the strength. By sun and cold, by rain and snow, In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth, We find the patriarchs of both. And they hold counsel with the stars Whose broken branches show the scars Of many winds and much of strife. This is the common law of life.
Eta; it was erbear. Thank you. It has been a good one for me.

He has improved slightly. Still on the ventilator, but way less iv meds. They are hopeful that they will not have to do surgery on his intestines because the antibiotics seem to be fighting the infection. They are still getting some gunk from his lungs when they do the suctioning, but it isn't much so they are hoping to lower the support on the vent today and see how he does. The plan was to do that yesterday but they put it on hold because of the increase in lung gunk yesterday. He's still very sick, but things are not as perilous as Thursday or Friday.
