If anyone is aware of more current article that says basically the same thing, please share here. I'd love to share it, but I know the people I hope would read it would say, "Yes, but that was 5 years ago. If it was such a concern, why don't we hear more about it?"
A couple of 2017 articles, but they seem to focus on men:
They've been trying to prove vitamins do something for years. You'll not prove a negative. How much money to keep throwing at this? True believers won't be convinced. And big supplement has a breasted interest in keeping you giving yourself expensive pee. I'm probably preaching to the choir.
Mrsa, vit d also helps with ca absorption. I'm deficient in both despite sunny California.
Fun fact: if you’re ever stranded in the woods and you kill a bear to eat it, don’t eat its liver! It has too much vitamin A and can kill you!
Vitamins also infuriate my husband, who is an endocrinologist and has encountered far too many patients who insist on “treating” their thyroid problems with gluten free diets and vitamins, which obviously doesn’t work. It’s this emphasis on “natural” that we have in our culture and they tell him they want to teach their bodies to regulate their thyroids themselves without artificial medications. Why do they go see him then? Nobody knows.
I am supposed to take Vitamin D but I always forget. But that’s because I’m deficient and my doctor told me to do it. The last thing I need is trying to remember to take more pills.
I also used to take folic acid regularly because my doctor says there’s some evidence that it makes SSRI antidepressants more effective but I ran out and for some reason never bought more. I don’t feel any different though. It made my pee super yellow
eclaires I use one of those days of the week pill dividers that my grandparents used to have, lol. It makes me feel old, but it helps so much with the “did I remember to take XYZ?” in the mornings.
Why do ya’ll take vitamin D? That’s the one we get from sunlight, right?
I take it because when the doc tested my levels (after my complaint of fatigue), my Vit. D levels were so low she put me on prescription mega dose pills for a month, amd then told me to take the max daily recommended otc after that.
We will probably be testing the levels again soon, as i am still fatigued (although not as bad as then).
I avoid the sun because I burn at the drop of a hat no matter what spf I wear, and skin cancer runs in the family.

Interesting. My endocrinologist keeps pushing a gluten-free diet when i see her. Heavily pushes it.

I NEED to do this. I’m severely ADD (inattentive) so let’s just say that remembering daily things is not my forte. It’s all I can do to take care of everyone else in my family even when medicated for my ADD. For non daily things my mind is like a steel trap which is frustrating.

The hospital my husband works at also has a center for integrative medicine and the endocrinologists there also heavily push it. He sees zero difference in the levels of the patients who eventually come to him who are following the gluten free diet and those who aren’t. They also don’t feel any better, except for being cranky they haven’t eaten gluten and it hasn’t made a difference. According to him the evidence is flimsy, at best. No one in his practice recommends it.

I also have ADD (or vestiges of it, it was much worse when I was younger) and things like this make such a difference because otherwise 2 minutes after I take the pills, I’m wondering if I took the pills. I totally understand the frustration

Multiple times a day I wonder if I have taken my medicine! I’m a mess. Which reminds me I forgot to find out if my prescription was ready lol. ADD meds are like how many obstacles can we put in your way to keep you from getting meds.

Same. My dr. put me on the mega dose a couple of weeks before we went to Orlando, and I was feeling great until I forgot to take the weekly pill. I was getting tons of sun, but became really exhausted (and not the "I'm at Disney exhausted," because I felt great after I remembered to take the pill).

Mine too. I just say back "I can't. Gluten is my lyfe!" It's so annoying.

I take it in the winter because unless I’m on the road for work I get virtually no exposure to sunlight. Both my morning and evening commutes are outside of the hours of sunlight. Andrhe few hours I might get on the weekend aren’t enough.
You Coloradans are spoiled in this regard.
I’m a CO native and my D was low the last time I was tested. It is common in women.

Folic acid is in so many things now, like bread and cereals, etc. so you may be getting what you need without any supplements.
I have to say I both believe that it's hokum and believe they are doing me some good too. This reaction bothers me.
It can be both Legit if deficient, hokum to mega dose things like b and c. We may have shit diets, but most people still get enough of most vitamins. C won't prevent your cold, but iron if you're anemic is a good idea.

I've lived here most of my life and my Vitamin D was low too. I started taking 5k a day but that still didn't get me in the normal range. Now I take 10k a day to stay in the normal range.

I think the hokum comes in when people promote extreme supplements or “natural” remedies as a way of circumventing medicine or clinical treatments.
I believe that some supplementation is fine or, in some cases where deficiency is the case or during pregnancy, even desirable or necessary.
It’s when people pump their bodies full of vitamins or supplements their bodies don’t need or push holistic remedies instead of things like vaccines, antibiotics, or medical care that it becomes problematic and/or harmful.
I live in central Texas and my vitamin D level is extremely low year round. I take Rx vitamin D. I also have B12 deficiency and supplement that too. My problems are related to also having diabetes, so there you go.
When I was taking Effexor for anxiety, I also took Deplin (rx l-methylfolate). It helped the SNRI work better.

Or she might have the MTHFR mutation which means her body wouldn't be able to process folic acid, only folate.
This is why we need more individualized recommendations for stuff like vitamins.

I'm responding before reading the rest of the thread - but we need it in CO too. When I had my bloodwork done for IVF stuff, that's one thing I was deficient in, and they said it was fairly common here.
I see the CO people need vit D too had already been covered.
Anecdotal, but I had a coworker who was hospitalized for too many supplements. I can't remember exactly what was thrown out of whack, but it was because her husband is a HUGE believer in supplements and was having them both take massive doses of everything. He basically overdosed her on something.
I've got a hereditary thing where I have a *lot* of iron in my blood. When I took prenatals I had to look for the ones that didn't include extra iron.

Yeah, I’m wondering about my levels now. I’ve been pretty militant with sun protection since Shanbrite. (and also to maintain my youthful complexion - lol).
I’m a big fan of daylight bulbs and I tried to figure out if I’m getting any UVs from them. Google says yes, but not how much. Depending on the source, it’s either “negligible” or “dangerous” - lol.
