Just had one this morning. I find it tends to happen shortly after I pin something new, although I wonder if you are getting some spammers.
I have been avoiding Pinterest for a while now because spam seems to have spiraled out of control on there. The last time I visited, probably 80% of the links I clicked were spam. Aside from preferring to see legitimate sites, I'm concerned about getting a virus. I'm just glad I was able to collect a bunch of awesome new recipes and cooking websites before the invasion. I will be interested to see how Pinterest deals with this problem, because its format practually begs to be abused by spammers.

I am just now trying to get on Pinterest (i know i know). Anyway I asked to be invited on the sign up page and it still has not happened. I don't get it.

I can invite you if you want--just need an email address to use.

It takes awhile that way - two weeks for me. Instantaneously if someone invites you.
I pin only once every few weeks, when I find something that I really want to remember and reuse, and I keep getting random followers. I am not liking that at all. I'd been trying to figure out how to get rid of them, but haven't found time to sit down at a computer and figure out whether I could do it or not.

Same here. I took a break for a while because it seemed like it had turned into a spamming haven.

I'm sort of curious about the spam comment. I'm new to pinterest and within the last few weeks (since i got active on pinterest), i noticed a slow down in my browser. Defintely when on pinterest, but then all the time. I ran a virus scan - nothing. I checked to see if any strange processes were running - none seemed out of the ordinary. But then one day I had to restart a few times. And the final time, it wouldn't restart. At all. Like, dead computer. Blue screen of death and then...nothing. I have to contact Toshiba to get a restore disc, but right now my computer is toast. I don't really visit many websites other than the nest, and news sites - till pinterest (not even facebook). So I'm sort of wondering if I really had a virus.
Anyway - is pinterest known for viruses? And the spammers - I feel like the sites I visited weren't spam, but then, these people followed me out of the blue so... Is the moral of the story here to be wary of people you don't know following you?
Confession: We're going to try TTC in the late fall, and I've created another board with a crap ton of maternity fashion inspiration and nursery ideas. I didn't want people I know to start speculating that I'm pregnant, when I'm not. Anywho, having just that one has been refreshing. No crazy cakes people, no spam, no randoms. I'm sure that will change over time.

AFAIK, Pinterest doesn't have a reputation for spreading viruses... yet. However, the spam problem has become widely discussed and the big question is how Pinterest is going to protect itself since its format is perfect for spammers.
As for the spam itself, the Pinterest variety tends to involve being taken to a site that is unrelated to the picture on which you click. So, for example, you click on a gorgeous dress and wind up on a weight-loss website.
Fortunately people are starting to note beneath pins if they are spam. Unfortunately, when I last logged on and scrolled through, a substantial majority of the pins had "spam" in the comments directly below.
