If the phrase 'my wife' is not the subject of the sentence, he could have been saying anything - Mary wanted him to take someone to be his wife, he wanted someone to be his wife who he never married. There's tons of possible statements.
Also, as to michellebelle, original sin (which is not accepted by every Christian sect) gets washed away upon baptism, not the crucifixion. If carnal impulses arose from original sin, no one would have them after baptism. Further, impulses are not acts. Sins are acts.
