What is your breakdown for the bill, and have you tried negotiating? We pay $100 for Fios cable and internet. I'm not gonna lie, it was an annoying amount of negotiation to get there. But, they will negotiate. The cancellation department seems to have more leeway on getting the price lower than the regular customer service. We negotiated with Cox too, but they couldn't get as low as Verizon, so we went with Fios. I'm not sure of the exact cable package, but we get channels like HGTV and Nickelodeon but not some of the more obscure ones. So, just a thought if you still want to watch some sports or things you can't stream.
I'm not sure of the exact breakdown, but I know that we have quite a bit in box rental charges. We have 3 DVRs and a regular box. We also have nearly every channel including all of the Premiums which we hardly ever watch. I didn't even have cable before I met my H and was just fine without and this was back when Netflix was one of the only streaming services. He's going to have a much harder time cutting the cord than I am.
I haven't had cable my entire adult life. We have Netflix, Amazon prime movies and at one point had Hulu too. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

We still have cable mainly because DH can't let go because sports. I also kind of like being able to just flip on whatever is on TV sometimes. If your H can't/won't, maybe you could drop the DVRs and premium channels. We dropped our DVRs and I missed them at first, but now I don't even think about it. Everything I want to watch comes out on Netflix or Amazon eventually.

We have a roku and stream Sling (for $30/mo because we pay $5 for the DVR service) - which gets CN, Nickelodeon, Disney, AMC, BBC, HGTV etc. We use the ABC/NBC/CBS roku apps to watch those shows - only because we are never home to catch them over the air (we DO have a cheap OTA recorder but it's a PITA to program and we frequently forget we have anything recorded). We also have Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube.
We pay $30 for Sling and $15 for netflix. Every so often I'll spring for a month of HBO/Starz/Showtime so we can binge watch GOT/Outlander/Shameless.
We ditched cable TV this summer. I tried to negotiate, and said I wanted to be out the door for $135 (the cost of Xfinity business internet plus youtube TV monthly price), premium channels not included. The best they could do was $169. They *almost* figured it out, at $140, but that didn't include all their asinine fees, so I walked.
We switched to an Xfinity business account for internet because H works from home regularly, and needs high speed for that.
For TV we use Netflix, Youtube TV, and Amazon Prime. Sports were holding us back, but you can get all the sports networks on Youtube TV. If he wants to follow a specific team, he can buy access to the pro Sport Apps (like MLB, NFL, etc), and you'll still come out ahead of paying for monthly cable. No regrets, don't miss it at all.

We have sling so DH can watch sports. I think with the sports package it's like $25/month. Internet is like $60/month and then we have hulu and Netflix, so $15/each per month. We probably spend about $115/month on streaming TV/shows and internet.
We cut cable about a month ago after Direct TV wanted to charge us for a 2 min appointment. I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. We use youtube TV and we share a Hulu account with my brother in law. Also of course Netflix. So far so good. In the same month we switched my father in law switched and we share our youtube with him. You can have it for multiple family members at a time. No restrictions.
We hesitated for so long because of the no live sports. But youtube has that and so does Hulu I believe. But with youtube you don't even have commercials.
We cancelled cable a few weeks ago after having a good experience during our trial with Direct TV Now. We really wanted the option to stream live news, and this was the best route for us. I still haven't figured out how to watch our local news. I'm pretty sure I can do it through my laptop. And maybe I can add an app to our Roku to allow for the local channel? At the end of the day, we're saving SO much money that I'm okay going without our local news.
I recently got DirecTV Now, which is streaming (not a dish). One of the main selling points for me was that it includes local channels in my area. I have the version that's $40 a month, and so far it's great.
Many things are available separately with individual subscriptions, and then to get the local channels you'd need a digital antenna. By the time I priced that out versus streaming cable (essentially what DirecTV Now is), DirecTV Now was more cost effective.
You'll probably need something for your main TV if you go with a streaming service like DirecTV Now or Sling or similar, as most usually only work with one particular kind of smart TV.
We have a Tivo. Can you use the DirectTV Now with it? We have a locked in cheap price with the Tivo and don't want to lose it. lol
I'm sorry--I don't know! I have never had Tivo, so I haven't looked into this issue.
I still haven't figured out how to watch our local news.
That’s why we went with youtube tv. It has the national news channels we wanted, and all of our local networks.
DirecTv now has local channels too. I watch the local news all the time. CloudBee You should be able to find them, assuming they are available in your area, by channel in the guide. Listed alphabetically, so NBC with the Ns, etc.
