The last veteran of World War II to serve as president, he was a consummate public servant and a statesman who helped guide the nation and the world out of a four-decade Cold War that had carried the threat of nuclear annihilation.
His death, at 94 on Nov. 30 also marked the passing of an era.

Mr. Bush died of SPECIFIC MEDICAL CAUSE OF DEATH, said/according to xxx. In 2012, he announced that he had vascular Parkinsonism, a condition that limited his mobility. His wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, died on April 17.
WaPo coming in a little hot on the pre-written story. Eep.

I always liked him despite a lot of his policies, he reminded me of my grandpa (WWII vet and even in looks and voice). Did not like anyone else in his family, but I am still sorry for them. I am surprised he lasted this long after Barbara.
My thoughts are with his family; it's so hard to lose someone this time of year, even if you know it's coming (my grandpa died in Dec 2008). I'm glad he was able to be at Barbara's wedding.
The first I caught of this was from a Facebook post from a high school friend: “RIP, Mr. President.” Cue the immediate search for additional identifying info.
I've seen him out and about so many times supporting Houston. I've seen him at Astros game, at musicals, at the ballet. I couldn't help but like him and Barbara. I wish his family peace during this time.
I feel sad for his family, losing him right before Christmas, but he seemed to have lived a long and productive life, so I imagine there is a great deal of comfort in that.

I hope the family finds peace during this time. I read the Obama tribute to 41. I hadn’t known some of the tidbits in there about him. His dedication to the service of this country was humbling.
I am very sorry to hear this for his family. I lost my grandmother on December 17 and my grandfather on December 26. It is very difficult losing someone around the holidays. And I think the ritual surrounding the death of a president is a lot to manage for the family this time of year especially. I am so happy he got to see Barbara married.
While there were several aspects of his politics that I disagree with, I have a tremendous amount of respect for this man and his lifetime of public service. Did you know that as a Navy fighter pilot he was shot down over Chichijima? He was one of nine pilots to be shot down -- the other eight were captured by the Japanese and severely beaten and tortured, then beheaded. George HW Bush was the only one to evade capture. He was only 20. Let that sit with you for a while.

holy crap. I didn't realize that was what happened. I knew he had been shot down and "almost died" but didn't realize the specifics of it.
Obama’s and the Clintons’ statements are very nice.
It reminded me back when we first moved to KC, my mom was recognized as a point of light. I’ll have to ask her the story, it’s an 8th grade memory I’d completely forgotten.

I hope he is at peace.
Also I saw this news alert for the first time at 4am and my blurry eyed self read “President” and “died” and momentarily jumped to a very different conclusion.

RIP Mr. President. Obama’s beautiful statement made me realize what a true patriot he was. His heart and soul were given to service of this country. May he rest peacefully with Barbara.

I read the letter he wrote to Bill Clinton. It was so kind and thoughtful. Not to make this political but I can’t help but think about the new era we are in and how truly lost as a country we are because of who is POTUS.
According to the NYT, Trump wrote (or had someone write) a decent memorial and he will be at the funeral. Should be fun, considering what he's said about Dubya, Jeb and also (while gentler) Senior.
Two book recs for those who might want to know more about his military and pre-VP political life as well as his relationship with Barbara and him in general - 41 by George W and The Great American Love Story of George and Barbara Bush by Ellie Leblond Sosa (one of their granddaughters).
I didn't know much about him before reading those. The love story one goes into good detail on his military experience, surprisingly. And 41 was one of the best books I read last year (also surprisingly lol). Warning both do talk a bit about the loss of their daughter Robin.
I never knew about his time in China, I found that really interesting.
