My dd is frustrating in that she only wants to read what ds read and liked. So she tried Harry Potter, but only got through the 1st one. Right now she is reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series because ds loved it (he rereads it occasionally). She also read about 30 of the Magic Treehouse books and a few of the My Weird School books. DS is doing Battle of the Books through the library, and I've really enjoyed all the books we're reading for that: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library (similar to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in a way), Wish Tree, My Life as a Book, Moo. Oh, and both loved the Notebook of Doom books, and ds loved the Last Kids on Earth books.
DD has a bookcase full of books. We read Elmo's Potty Book every single night. We frequently read Elmo's Nursery Rhymes too, but occasionally we are allowed to replace that with Go Dog Go (the previous favorite).

DD cannot handle these books. They are cute and she liked them but she only reads at night and they gave her nightmares! It took me awhile to make that connection. This makes finding books challenging for her. She can't handle anything even remotely creepy or scary.

I'm reading DS (6) the Harry Potter series. We started awhile ago and have taken breaks, but we're on book 5 now. He is really getting into them.
DD (2) loves book and thankfully she and I have the same taste in books, save for a few bad apples that were quickly "lost." (Olivia Clause and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer) She loves Today by Julie Morstad, anything by Mo Willems, anything by Mac Barnett or Jon Klassen, A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead, and anything by Oliver Jeffers.
Ds1 (6) loves any non-fiction books. His current favourites are the beginners books on things like Weather and Under the Sea, and their Look Inside Books. (Side note - in my opinion, Usborne have the best non-fiction books for early readers!).
In fiction, he loves DogMan and Captain UNderpants. He is also enjoying reading some of the classics (Treasure Island, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan etc). He reads these on his own usually, but my awesome dad will read them at the same time and pace so that they can regularly stop and discuss and make sure DS is understanding!
DS2 (4) has decided he wants to learn to read like his big brother so we are working through the Oxford Reading tree books together before bed. If he allows me to read somethign else, it is usually Julia Donaldson or this series about Harry and the Dinosaurs
As a more helpful answer, in heavy rotation for the 15m old are
Big red barn How do I love you I'm a big brother The Little Owl series (day, night and snow. These are a household favorite!) Llama Llama Red Pajama Harry the Dirty Dog Noisy Farm Animals
Anybody have favorites for colors, shapes or just words in general? He's really into "educational" books right now.
My 8 year old just finished HP the Prisoner of Azkaban and loved it. He's reading the Infinity Ring series with my husband. He also loves the 39 Clues series. He just got a Ranger in Time book (the Titanic one) and he really likes it, so he'll probably get more of those. He likes the Classroom 13 series and Geronimo Stilton.

My 9 yo is currently making his way through all of Rick Riordan's books. He has finished the Percy Jackson series and is reading all the rest. I can't get him books fast enough!

DD1 (7) is reading the first Harry Potter. She kind of jumps all over the place with books (changes daily what she likes), but Mr Popper’s Penguins is one of her favorites for sure. For a fun quicker read, she likes the Owl Diaries and Heidi Heckelbeck books.
She does Accelerated Reader for school so if anyone has any recommendations for books in the 3.8-4.5 AR range, but that a first grader would like, let me know. I think she’s burned out on a lot of stuff so I’m having trouble finding stuff that’s at her age level, but the higher AR level she’s at.
DD2 (5) is my Usborne queen and loves every lift the flap book (peek inside, look inside, etc) from there and the Nibbles books.
Independently, my kid is obsessed with the rainbow magic fairy books. I hate then, so she reads them on her own.
She's also really into Junie B. Jones at the moment, which, say what you will about Junie as a role model, still make me crack up (though I have to do a lot of explaining about why we don't call people this out that and what not).
My 2 year old has entered a phase of loving the Maisey books, which I wish he would exit! He's also really into all things vehicles with Little Excavator and I'm a Little Ice Cream Truck/Firetruck/Dump Truck/etc at the top of the list.
This is all very timely, as I just started reading Matilda to my DD (5.5). It is...different than I remember. We haven't encountered anything too problematic yet, but I'll plan to discuss it with her when we do. It might be slightly over her head, but I'm so tired of the same old books all of the time. She's beginning to read on her own, but is definitely not ready for chapter books on her own yet. I want to read her all of the books that I remember from my childhood (hence, Matilda), but I'm not sure which ones are best. I'm also open to newer books. If anyone has any suggestions for good read aloud chapter books for a kindergartner who scares easily, I'm all ears. I'm am dying to read Harry Potter to her, but afraid that if I start too early, she'll get scared and never want to read them again.
DS (almost 2) loves an Usborne Lift the Flap Farm book, Little Blue Truck Leads the Way, and all of the "How Do Dinosaurs" books.

DD loved The Princess in Black series in kindergarten. The Mercy Watson books are cute, too. If she likes humor Bad Kitty was a favorite of DD’s at 6 and 7.

Thank you! We have read some Mercy Watson. I'll check out the others!
DS1 7 - we recently read Wishtree together - we both loved it. He’s currently reading Dragon Masters series on his own. We are listening to Moo in the car. He likes non fiction science books.
100 Christmas Words. Santa regrets that purchase, lol.
All of our Christmas books were packed up in a box with the Christmas things. I figure that is the only way for me to continue liking some of them. They will reappear next Christmas season.

I remember loving all the Ramona books, have you read those? Also things like Ralph S. Mouse.
For a newer one, maybe The Wild Robot? I'm not sure if that would get too scary for her, there is a fight at the end of the book.

He didn't even like it at Christmas time! I actually need to make a few books disappear. I keep moving them around the house and somehow he finds them.
