I one accidentally bought a $50 swell bottle from Starbucks. Some kind of limited edition one that was a collaboration with a British fabric company. (At the time I recognized neither the swell brand name nor the fabric company.) It was supposed to be like a $15 secret Santa gift at work. But then I realized how much it cost and kept it. It’s very pink and flowery which is hilariously NMS at all.
I kind of hate you for alerting me to the fact that Liberty of London did a Starbucks water bottle thing. I waaaaannnnttttt ttthhheeeemmmm 😍😭 I’m obsessed with floral prints and their fabric in particular and even had custom ties made from it for all the bridesmen at our wedding.
Yeah, add me to the be-stickered Hydroflask group. I have a green one at work and a mint one for home, with various stickers on each. At work I can refill at the water cooler and generate a lot less waste than the cans of various drinks that the fridge is stocked with, and in the meantime it makes me happy.
I acknowledge that it's over-thought, but that doesn't necessarily make it not a thing.
FWIW, my instagram is littered with pictures of my stickered nalgene next to flights of beer. So it is kind of a status symbol.
I didn't realize that other parts of the country didn't really use water bottles like people in CO do. I hosted a gtg here (not for CEP) and several people actually bought water bottles for the trip since I said that everyone here carried/used them.
I say this about recyclable bags as well. When I'm visiting my parents in Reno, when I say that I have a bag, I more often then not get "oh, you must be from California". I didn't realize that recyclable bags were a CA thing.
I carry my steel water bottle with me everywhere. I don’t know what brand it is. I had no idea water bottles were a status symbol! I just know I can’t go 5 minutes without drinking water. It is an addiction.
They are definitely a “thing” here. I don’t know about a status symbol per se, but people definitely personalize them. They’re like pieces of flair. I guess in the military we don’t have many ways to visually depict our personality and hobbies, but water bottles (and stickers) are allowed so that’s what people use (that and phone cases).
I personally use a yeti tumbler with a lid and silicone straw. No stickers for me, but I have fun with the straw color.

Our travels to CO prompted our constant carrying of water bottles

I bought a slew of water bottles w/ funny sayings on them for my office mates for the holidays, but they're just the random stainless ones (cheap!). My favorite one was for the math coach that said, "It's all fun and games until someone tries to divide by 0." Mine says LIBRARIAN (in Google font/colors): The Original Search Engine.

Liberty of London? eta: I hadn't read the rest of the thread but now I see it's been covered.
I own a few hydroflasks but didn't put much thought into it other than I wanted something insulated and lightweight. I also have a S'well, but I prefer the hydroflasks.

I think it’s just not a Nevada thing.
It’s a California thing. They have banned plastic bags at grocery stores, target, etc. You either have to bring your own, or pay 10 cents per bag for a plastic one. I forget this every time I go, and get annoyed and end up buying 1 plastic bag that I try and cram everything into. Even Disneyland has gone plastic bag free, they sell reusable bags now.
I mean I have a glass water bottle and all that just like every other person but if it’s a status of anything it’s a status of having access to clean water. 🤷♀️
Now I am self conscious about the free plastic cup with a lid I brought to my new job this week. I got it when I signed up for a library card and it has the library name on it, so at least people may think I am smart because I read?
I bring a water bottle everywhere. I had no idea this was regional or a status thing. I am just thirsty a lot and don't like waste. I normally use a 3 year old dingy CamelBak (that is inaccessible to me until the weekend) but now I feel like I need to upgrade to be taken seriously lol.

Why would one need a water bottle with a flight of beer?
I have about 5-ish glass or stainless steel water bottles that DH and I use every day. The reasons I started using them include reducing plastic consumption, health concerns (related to plastic), needing water all the time (especially in the summer) and ease of grab and go.
I have no stickers and take mine everywhere...even in restaurants.
Many would someone post pictures of there water bottles? Damn hippies!
I never would have thought of putting stickers on a water bottle.
I have a Nalgene bottle that I keep next to my bed because I’m always thirsty at night and I won’t use an open cup for fear of spiders getting inside. I do have a plastic straw cold cup from Starbucks that I mainly use at home or in the car. We have a cheap Mickey Mouse water bottle that I usually keep in the backpack. I don’t really give a second thought to any of this, nor have I ever thought about it being a status symbol. I just carry water because I get thirsty.
I did just buy a relatively expensive coffee cup (the keep cup) because I like the idea of not using to go cups, and I think it’s pretty.

I use S'well knockoffs I get on Amazon for like $10-15. But it's function over status -- I fly a ton for work and like to have water with me, the pretty colors make me happy, and I like the screw top/narrow mouth for drinking and the slim profile for my carryon bag. But given how frequently I leave said water bottles in airports/hotel rooms, no way am I buying the "real thing."
I don't really see the "status symbol" element, but I do think there's something to all the expensive water bottle options out there.
I am personally using a Bubba brand stainless cup with a hard plastic lid and straw. I find that I drink from it much more often than I do with a water bottle where I would have to pick it up to drink it. It pretty much travels with me all the time, even on my commute. I did not realize that people outside of Colorado don't necessarily have a water bottle on their person at all times.

Why would one not have a water bottle with a flight of beer? I carry it wherever I go. Plus, drinking at altitude, even those of us that live here, without water is a somewhat unpleasant experience.

I wonder if that would work here. Because of liquor laws, if you bring a regular disposable water bottle into a bar they have to make you dump it out. Breweries usually offer a water cooler and cups but they're tiny. I would love to have a bigger container on hand. I would definitely bring one of our dozen+ Camelback bottles rather than something fancy though, just in case I forgot it.

I don't really have strong feelings about water bottles but I really like this writer. I've been following her for a few years our interests intersect (water bottles excluded).
It has been a status symbol for a long time. If you do not have the current "hot" water bottle, you will be asked about it here. I will never have one because I tend to choose things I like that are pretty over any name brand. I don't own a single name brand item, so it really does amuse me when people ask me about whatever the current trend is.
However, I have noticed that the interest in popular items can spark conversations and provide opportunities that not everyone will be able to have. I just cannot sustain that lifestyle, so I would rather miss out entirely than be frustrated when pop culture moves on from the current trend.

Okay I guess I get it now. I have never heard of water bottles being a thing. I have one of those bottles because someone Bought it for me and I didn’t know it was a status symbol. This is def regional.

I think you can bring empty cups/bottles and they will fill them for you. I’ve seen them do it at Manor Hill anyway!
