Oh, you mean because it wasn't staged by people who knew him, and the police went down a rabbit hole that fit the story they liked best? Shocked. Utterly shocked I say.
Um, this actually suggests that the police think it was staged. News reports say that new evidence obtained during their interrogations led to them being released. I’m guessing they told the police that Smollett was in on it. No attack = no charges for these guys.
That’s not how this works. They’d be charged for conspiracy and various related crimes they wouldn’t be released. More likely the police got a bad tip and followed it and found out it was wrong and these guys weren’t involved at all.

Oof, your lack of understanding on how this would work is embarrassing for someone who’s talking like they know something. I just can’t figure out why you would be twisting so hard not to see him as the victim. It sure is a mystery! I wonder what the possible reason for your seeming certainty that he is guilty of being in on his own violent attack could possibly be! Hmmmmmmmmm.

Yes, I, like 90% of people who are following this story, including black and LGBTQ individuals, am racist, and that’s why I’m doubting him. It’s not because his story makes no sense, or that he’s friends with guys who apparently had some involvement, or that he provided redacted phone records.

I personally keep seeing on twitter that Chicago police have said the hoax allegations are inaccurate. So maybe it’s just the people you follow Stella?

Just to be clear, I don’t think you’re a racist because you question his story, although it is strange how hate crime stories, DV stories, and sexual assault stories are the only ones that seem questionable. Rather, I think you’re a racist because your rationale for questioning his story was that the people of interest are black, and I think you’re homophobic because the fact that they were people of color should not discount the possibility that they could be homophobic. I also think you’re probably both racist and homophobic because you came out of lurking, when you never post or engage with us, specifically to question this story.

The Chicago police chief personally called the station who reported this to tell them their supposed inside sources are “uninformed and inaccurate.”

You can think I’m racist and homophobic if you like, I don’t care. I know that I’m not. I can just spot a story that doesn’t make sense when I see one. And like I said, if you read the news coverage of this story, it’s starting to become clear that it didn’t happen the way he says it did. The brothers gave police information and Smollet has hired a criminal defense attorney. Come on.

oh you are! But the thing is, your racism and homophobia are independent of this case. You don’t get it— it’s not your feelings about this case. It’s the assumptions you came in with about black people, black people being in league together, and who can or can’t be a homophobe.

It’s the doubling down by someone who doesn’t even go here that is so fascinating to me. Why the sudden interest and insistence on your particular (uninformed) interpretation of these events? Don’t bother trying to answer, that was rhetorical.

I’m also kind of blown away that hiring a defense attorney is being read as a signal of guilt in this situation. He is a celebrity who is being publicly accused of faking a hate crime committed against him. Why in the world wouldn’t he hire an attorney?

You do realize that all we know is the police learned something from them. That could simply be that they were at X during the time of the attack and couldn’t be involved right?
Hiring a defense attorney in this situation with people like you saying he was in on it is the smart thing to do so it means nothing except Smollet isn’t an idiot. I’d hire one as well, add in that as a black man he is more at risk for being mistreated by the justice system and I’d be surprised if he didn’t hire an attorney
Yes! And she is oblivious to the fact that not charging these guys and saying they are no longer suspects indicates that the set up theory has been disproved (at least as far as these guys being involved goes)

I've heard enough police interrogations to think anyone should get an attorney whether they did something or not.

Especially if you’re a black man in America. Come on, indeed.

Look, I know GBCN is the primary social outlet for a lot of you. Every social group has a way in which members can signal to other people in the group that they “belong” - in some groups it’s financial success, some it’s your physical appearance - here it’s a level of political correctness that borders on insanity, even if it portrays an alarming lack of critical thinking skills. Calling out “racism” is the way you feel as though you belong. And that’s cool. It’s working for you.
But as someone pointed out, I don’t “go here.” I don’t care about any of you, so I am free to say (write) what a LOT of people are thinking. People who are actually thinking clearly and looking at the circumstances are remaining silent, because they can’t afford to not belong to your group.
But keep calling me a racist and homophobe - when the truth comes out, I’m guessing none of you who do “go here” will have the courage to condemn what Smollett has done - seriously hurt genuine victims of past and future hate crimes. Because hey, that would make you a racist too, right?
Oh gfy. I’ve expressed my thoughts on the matter but I try not to be a smug twat about it. The women here are not lacking in critical thinking skills, not in the least, and if you could see past your own asshole, you’d see that.

If your version of truth comes out as actual truth (huge if), I think yes.... we would all condemn his actions. But as of now, you’re accusing a victim of staging the attack with zero proof.

presuming the truthfulness of people who say they are attacked is “politically correct”? Even perpetrators of crimes are legally allowed the presumption of innocence.
I do appreciate the effort to Jane Goodall our social interaction while simultaneously insulting everyone here. Well played. I look forward to your dissertation.
