Guys, DD2 had her gymnastics showcase last night and it was the cutest thing ever! She did so well, and she was so proud of herself. As much as I was really hoping she’d end up a swimmer like her big sister, I think she has definitely found her “thing”.
First swim meet of the season for both the big girls is next weekend. DD1 is swimming the 500 free for only the second time ever and she’s really excited. Distance swimmers are a weird breed!
DS is doing well at fencing and getting close to a rank that his club has. He has a tournament coming up. My fav part about fencing tournaments are they are efficient. 90 mins and we are outta there. He fences a less popular weapon though.
Dd is doing soccer and she’s not aggressive...or particularly skilled so she takes afternoon me. But she has fun and it’s rec.
It has been a softball- filled week. Since last Saturday, DD has played 5 games and missed one. She’s not the best, but she’s developing into a solid player. And her tantrums are a liiiittle bit better when she’s active.
Both kids joined a running club through school. DD1 inherited my speed, poor dear, so I’m hoping this helps her softball and basketball speed. Honestly she can hit the ball so hard, and most kids would have a home run when she gets a double.
DD2 is enjoying running club and tennis, but I really wish I put her in lacrosse. Spring soccer wasn’t an option. So she spends most of her time getting dragged to her sister’s softball games.

It has happened!!! DS got a hit! And made it to first! And was not out!
And THEN guys, he made it all the way around the bases and scored on other kid's hits! And THEN at his next at bat, he got ANOTHER HIT!
And now he's at an American Ninja warrior birthday party and DS sent me videos of him doing all this stuff. The little man is brave
DD has her gymnastics showcase in two weeks and is so excited!! All going well in sports I guess. I am looking forward to getting DS and DD into swim when baseball is over though.
DD started ice skating this spring.. she is not very good but I’ve got my fingers crossed that she maybe found something to stick with. She’s about 1/3 way through the session and is at least off the buckets.
She could care less about any kind of sport or activity, so my nope aren’t high.
It’s particularly hard on me since I was a figure skater growing up and “bought” ice time by doing lessons. But she won’t listen to me...
Baseball is not going well. At DS’s request we switched from church to Rec league. Rec hardly ever practices because there are 1-2 games a week and the last 2-3 games were rained out so basically nothing is happening. All his friends are in this one, but I kind of miss the league that starts later in the year (better weather) and has so many practices that I was wondering when they would ever get their uniforms or play games. I think they practiced for 4 weeks first. Rec practiced for 1 week.
madringal, LOL about distance swimmers being a weird breed. I was a swimmer, and sprinting (free or butterfly) was my thing. I remember not being happy at all the one time my coach made me do the 500 free in a meet. I know he wanted everyone to try every event, but it was hard for me to get the right pace for distance events.
DS had a little league game on Friday evening. He got to pitch a few innings, which he enjoys. His next game is on Wednesday. Forecast for a lot of rain on Wednesday, so I'm hoping they cancel his game with a good amount of advance notice so I can make an actual dinner.
All of DS's little league games are on weeknights, so we have our Saturdays back on weekends he doesn't have a tournament with his travel team. I love having no games on Saturdays so I can go to the farmer's market or do stuff around the house.
DD1 just got another game scheduled this week. So we have 5 games scheduled and will have to miss one of those. Plus her group therapy meeting, an appointment with a nutritionist, and running practice. Oof. Oh and DH is on the other side of the country.
Good news is that it’s supposed to rain in Friday, so maybe this newly scheduled game will get rained out?? Fingers crossed 🤞🏻
Soccer was rough this past Saturday. It rained the night before so there were a few muddy spots on the field. The kids had a hard time listening and ended up playing in the mud any chance they got. Some of them just stopped playing altogether during the last 5 minutes of the game. I'll be glad when the season is over in two weeks. Coaching 4-5 year olds is frustrating!
DD has 3 softball games this week. I haven't been to any of the practices to see how she stacks up against the others on her team since soccer for DS1 is at the same time. But DH says she is probably the weakest player. She had a rough time with softball before because her ADD was untreated. Now that she is on meds, I wanted her to give softball another try. We have already told her coaches to treat her as if she has never played. So far, she is making improvements. I just hope she doesn't get too frustrated or the team resents her.

Haha, she can pace herself all day. In fact for a long time her 50 free splits of her 200 were faster then her actual 50 free. Same with the 100 splits - faster then her actual 100. And then when she would swim a 50, we would be like, "Ok, just pretend its a 200, but swim the first 50 and stop!" But nope, her 50 free time was always a second or two slower then a split.
She just turned 11 so she'll have a lot more opportunities to swim the 500. And now shes got her eye on the 1650. Like I said, weirdo.
DS is in a non-competitive rec league for baseball. His team is 6-8 year olds. Yesterday they had practice 4-7. Even when I played high school sports, practices weren't that long. Give me back my family time!

CrazyLucky, I would have a big issue with a 3 hour practice for 6-8 year olds in a non-competitive league. 1.5 hours max for that age and type of league. I'd probably ask the coach about it, and if they don't have a good reason for it, I'd tell them my child would be there from x:xx - y:yy (not the full 3 hours).
madringal, I was that crazy distance swimmer too. I hated when they started considering the 200 a sprint. I was never fast so at least the number of kids competing in the 500, 1000, 1650 were less so I posted better in the ranks.
DD is getting frustrated at gymnastics. The other 3 girls are catching on to the new skills really quickly and she is struggling. She was in tears Friday at dinner so called her private lesson lady. She was booked on Saturday but the kids have no school Wednesday for a planned teacher walk out so DD is going to hang with her at her daycare and work on a couple skills during the day away from the gym. Coach N also talked with DD at open gym while they were working on this heal snap turn about how gymnastics can get frustrating but she needs to say she is frustrated so they can either take a break from the skill or switch up how they are teaching it.
The head coach of team told me that DD is always so happy and chatty when she comes in and she doesn't want her to change one bit.
DD has a volleyball tournament this weekend and for the first time ever I think I will let one of my kids elect to skip. Her coach walked out of their last game because they were playing badly. Last night at practice the coach’s daughter told DD that she sucks. DD and the daughter were benched but the daughter was allowed to play before DD. When DD was allowed back on the court the coach said she doesn’t know what DD is up to but she’s ending it. DD can be a PITA like any kid, but she swears there was nothing else happening and cried. I confirmed with another parent that this is in line with what she witnessed. DD said the coach’s daughter has been extending this to school as well, and begged me not to say anything. The girl hit DD in the face with hockey stick at Field Day on Friday.
So DD will skip the tournament. If DD remains upset or anything else happens I will escalate. We socialized with this family this weekend!! DD avoided the coach’s daughter mostly but I didn’t know why. Apparently even there the girl was trying to exclude DD. The other girl legitimately does suck at volleyball and DH has always cautioned me against having her over to play with DD. Now I am seeing it. Super frustrated, mostly with the adult that isn’t being an adult. And what I am saying to DD is very different than what’s in my head!
DD1 was supposed to have a game tonight but because of her behavior, I told her she couldn’t go. Her team ended up having to forfeit because she didn’t go. She totally did not care.
She’s playing Friday night and Saturday morning, and another coach asked her to play a division up on Saturday as well. So she will have back to back games and play with the older kids.
And I’m pretty sure I should just set up our camper in the parking lot of the softball field.

2chatter, how awful! That makes me want to smack someone.
The 4 yo is starting swim lessons again this weekend and now DD1 (7) says she wants to go back but she doesn’t want to quit horse riding. I told her she could maybe do two activities again after we had a little break. She was such a PITA about soccer. But she’s a little fish and really does love to swim, though she’s getting to the age where I feel like a rec swim team would be appropriate and she becomes a wreck at any hint of competition.
I hope this round of swim for DD2 ends in actually knowing how to swim this round. She’s so close to my being able to lay by the pool!
Idk if horse riding belongs in this thread, but DD1 has started trotting and I’m going to schedule her first trail ride soon.

We are in our 3rd year of baseball but first for coaches pitch. DS has had 2 games and has only gotten to bat twice. DH is going to try to get him a chance to catch so he gets a chance to do something.
I'm helping run the concession stand this year. It has been a lot more difficult than I expected getting parents to volunteer 1.5-3 hours of their time one single time.
erinshelley21 - I have stopped doing anything that requires other parents. Well, I am not a good judge of that actually so I think now I will be done volunteering full stop. It really makes me mad. My latest isn’t sports, it’s the 5th grade grad slideshow - deadline of 4/18 and I still only have 30 of 87 kids. I’m out of time to work on this. People suck.
librarychica, I'm so excited your DD can now trot. Horse stuff is totally a sport. Good luck on the trail ride. DD would give anything for a trail ride but I haven't found anyone willing to take her.
DD is trying so hard to get this heal snap turn on the beam. She is way overthinking it and just needs to loosen up and go for it but that is mom saying this.

2chatter it's so frustrating. A couple parents on the board are throwing around ideas like having parents choose to work 5-10 hours at the league in some capacity (prepping fields, mowing, concession) or pay an extra $50 and the extra $50 will go towards paying HS or college students home from break to work the stand.
2 years ago I suggested using HS students that need volunteer hours. It took until right now when I became involved for it to happen. The problem I'm running into with this is the kids that want the hours are busy with their own sports and dont have time.
I thought I had solid help from my niece that could be on a recurring basis, but MIL found a sucker in her van that we are 99% sure niece stole from the stand. This is the same niece that stole a couple bucks from us at a couple of years ago. I even asked her several times if she wanted anything and if I needed to add anything to my tab.

I do not get the “refuse to volunteer” mentality. It makes me so angry! We have 125 swimmers from our team competing in this weekends swim meet. We have less then 30 parents signed up to help. Our coaches do an incredible job of keeping the costs low so more kids can participate and it just feels like parents take advantage of it.
Our baseball league requires everyone to volunteer for something. And honestly that’s why we are looking for another league. I don’t need or want a snack bar. I have literally never bought anything at a snack bar there. I have no interest in working the snack bar. I would happily pay extra to not have to wrangle parents into this BS or do it myself.
I had to work the concession stand in college (college football) which was very busy, but whoever ran it was also super mean and made it a horrible experience. So yeah i’m kind of in the never again camp although I realize that little kid sports will probably be a lot lower key. We have no concessions at any of our sports so far.

She takes lessons at a horse rescue outside of town twice a month and they do periodic group trail rides. Her teacher says she can go whenever I give the ok. I think I’ll probably go with her. I haven’t been on a horse since about a year before she was born, so hopefully it’s like riding a bike!

Friday confession? I enjoy things like working concession stands or cash register book fair duty. A few hours of simple commerce? Much better than a reoccurring commitment and I get to play shop.

I feel the same way! I keep offering to work the concession stand at softball and the league director insist on doing it. Like - she’s in the snack shack with the deep fryer 5 nights a week and all day Saturday 🤷♀️
erinshelley21 Our league assigns teams to specific days of concession volunteering. For example, Team Machine Pitch Cubs has to cover April 12 and May 17. A few parents sign up to cover 1-3 hours.
It might help encourage parents that are now friends to sign up together.
That's exactly what we do lol. And each team has only ONE single shift and it's even scheduled on a day that team isn't playing.

I dont hate it. The last couple years I've worked it I couldn't sign up fast enough because it gave me a few hours out of the house.
My only issue this year is that I keep getting stuck in there after opening and its running into DS's game times. I missed him actually making a play last night. The only time he has touched the ball while out in the field lol
