At our current house, we have space above the cabinets. I prefer it to be empty. Hope someone will post a nicely decorated one, because I have not seen one I like. This is the main reason we decided to build the cabinets all the way to the ceiling at the new house.
I'm with d0ri on this, but out of curiousity I did an image search to see if there was anything that was acceptable to me. This is what I found, but one would definitely have to have the right kitchen and/or personality to pull off the first two.
I've been wondering what other people put up there too. My new kitchen has a couple of feet between the ceiling and cupboard tops and I have no idea what to do with the space.
I don't think dust counts, but that's what we have. Actually, we raised our cabinets so the only part that has a space there is above the cabinet over the microwave. Right now there is an antique sifter and a handmade copper grater. And dust.
When we were house hunting a couple of years ago, we saw a lot of houses with a huge area above the cabinets. I think the only space that I thought was nicely decorated had art glass plates and vases displayed, and everything was uplit. It was like a gallery display, not crowded or anything.

We actually do not have any upper cabinets (and not really in a cool/modern type of way). When we renovate, I want cabinets up to the ceiling to maximize storage.

Team nothing for the most part too! I just hate the clutter. Mine aren't low enough for anything high up there/storage nor do they go all the way to the ceiling. PITA.
1/2 the year I have nothing. In the fall I have a silk leaf garland I put up. In the winter I have some cranberry viney stuff that lights up. I love, but I also have a cozy antiquey style that makes it work.

Storage. I really like the curtain idea. Though really, I think cabinets should go all the way to the ceiling for maximum storage. Hopefully someday that's what we'll have!
Yup! She's a black haired beauty that enjoys hurting people she literally purrs while she attacks. We are looking at rescuing a Great Dane and plan on naming him Lurch
If I had a choice I would have cabinets to the ceilint too, but our new house does not. lol I have seen a few photos online that I liked the look of. Not totally full of stuff (as in complete junk collection), just a few nicely placed things.
I dont know, I just dont like the look of it empty. (and sorry, not a fan of the curtain idea and DH would freak out if I tried that. lol) The space is just screaming for something to go there. lol

I'm also not a fan of things on top, but we used to store a big platter up there in our last (tiny) kitchen b/c I couldn't fit it in the cabinets.
Also, how about just LED or rope lighting? That would be something that could add some good mood lighting, but not really look like clutter on top.

I like those lighting pics. Also really like the cat. If you don't have big baskets, platters, bowls to store up there then I would just leave it empty.
I have a collection of various old mason jars that will eventually go up there (Wednesday doesn't bother things like that so it wouldn't be a problem) I just need to build risers for them because the crown molding sits above the top about 2"
we have a soffet above our cabinets, so i decided to fulfill my love for architectural artwork and hang some here. so, there is wrought iron, ceramic and resin elements. they all clean up very easily (given it is a kitchen and you can get grease/dust residue.
