Prorogation is when the Parliament is shut down. It normally happens after Parliament's business is done for the session. Due to Brexit, the Parliament has been in session for far longer than normal - BUT due to Brexit, it's not normal to do this and BoJo is doing it for far longer than is normal. Most of us think it's so that Parliament can't get in the way of a hard Brexit.
Thought I'd just bump this up rather than start a new thread. Has anyone seen the news about the "Yellowhammer Papers" release. It is kind of horrifying that there are people who know and are planning on the dire consequences of a no deal brexit, but are still happy to tra-a-la over the cliff.

I follow the Scotland subreddit too, I saw that post this morning. YIKES.
ETA: I am waiting to plan our trip to Europe in a few months until more deadlines pass. We are going to Berlin, but also possibly England (to visit family and also see a live show tour). If the tour doesn't get scheduled or there's other chaos surrounding Brexit, we won't do England and will take a different airline other than British Airways to get to Berlin.
Does stand = run? So they can run for office but can’t run as Tories?
For whatever reason I can't stop loling at this. Us non-Brits are all so confused...'Does Tory = GOP?, Does up = down??, Does shadow cabinet = Patronus???'
Been trying to follow it this whole thing, but it's all been pretty confusing to me. I'm learning a lot in this thread!

Yup, they are trying to say that the Yellowhammer papers were worst case scenario but in their original publication they were baseline. Horrifying. The people in charge are doing this because of money, cash and chaos. It's the same as in the US but in same ways more concentrated.
mrsukyankee, am I reading that right - hedge funds are essentially betting on a no deal Brexit? The only other "short positions" I can think of (because I am not in that world at all) is "The Big Short" which...worked out sooooo great.

Both betting on it AND financially backing the political machinations to make it happen: first the political campaign in favor of Brexit, then helping put in office the guy who was most likely to go forward without a deal.
I'm pretty sure if this was sports, something like this would be illegal. Instead, y'know, it's "just" backing the break up of the EU, plunging economies on either side of the Channel into chaos, opening the door to renewed conflict in Northern Ireland and risking the global economy, so your short comes out the way you want it.

litebright, there is a lot that was illegal around the Brexit stuff but because it was "only" an advisory vote it doesn't have to be investigated. Which is why we shouldn't be following it. Because if it were a lawful referendum, the illegal crap would have made the referendum illegal and thus it would have been scrapped. Cameron fucked it up in so many ways.
