How do y'all feel about a recent college grad applying for a job in a professional field with a lip ring? A friend can't get past any initial interviews and I'm curious if the lip ring might be playing a part in that...?
I think it sucks, but as long as The Olds are still running most of our industries, a piercing could be the thing that holds a great candidate back. Your friend should consider whether a company that would reject them based on that is the right fit for their personality anyway, but at some point you have to get hired, ya know?

Depends. I can tell you that while piercings and tattoos aren't included/mentioned in our official dress code, a visible piercing like this would be frowned upon and an otherwise qualified candidate might not get past the initial interview stage.
ChillyMcFreeze, @sameoldstory, I was thinking along the same lines. I'm 10 years older than her and had to remove my eyebrow ring to get a job in corporate America "back in the day" and have thought about bringing it up but didn't know if I was just being an old fuddy duddy.

I can tell you that in my 20+ years working in a corporate environment, I’ve never noticed a coworker with a lip ring. I think it would be considered unprofessional for my industry.
I think it's fine, especially given that it sounds like you're choose more "demure" options for earrings/studs. Your CEO sounds like an absolute douche and is probably going to pick on you for anything and everything if they (like you suggested) don't like you.
If they bother you again, say it relates to your medical history and if they like you could get an accommodation letter from your doctor. That will either shut them up quick, or you literally get a quick note faxed from your primary care person saying yep this helps with headaches. Problem solved.
I personally love piercings. I work for the government though. In the office people don't really care, on jobsite, they have to take them out though, for safety. I would imagine if you are in healthcare, it might become a safety thing? People might grab them? I don't know, playing devils advocate here, trying to figure out why someone would have an objection to it.
I’m in the accounting department so safety isn’t an issue.
My employee handbook states no facial piercings or visible tattoos, but it isn’t enforced. CEO is just trying to offer me professional mentorship in the bitchiest way possible.
If my doctor or nurse had their lip pierced, I’d probably question their seriousness and professionalism, but even a nose piercing wouldn’t bother me in the healthcare field. I think this is a weird thing for the CEO to complain about. But I also worked for a lady who would look at your legs every morning to make sure you had on pantyhose, so I know this type of uptight manager still exists out there...
Ha, that’s interesting because I’m a doctor and live in a very liberal city and work in a very liberal healthcare center and I love it. I have my nose pierced and am thinking about getting another piercing. Other employees have various other piercings and very visible tattoos and colorful hair colors. I’m so glad my workplace is open to this especially since we welcome patients from allllll walks of life. It would be awkward if we all walked around not ourselves and super conservative. My best residency friend has a septum piercing. She often wore a clear retainer so you couldn’t tell, but not always.
Earlier today I did a procedure and there was a doula in the room to help the patient through the procedure. The doula just came up to me and said she has never seen a patient more calm during a procedure in all her time working here and that I did such a wonderful job with the procedure. Our piercings certainly don’t get in the way of our brain power, empathy and patient care
I’m in accounting too and personally I don’t care at all, but all but one of my former bosses would judge it because they are annoying, old school and conservative. I really pushed back on my boss’ Decision to not hire someone bc she had a visible tattoo on her arm. This person was the best applicant but my dumb boss thought it was unprofessional. She was overall a terrible person as well. So really if this is a dealbreaker for a supervisor then....you probably don’t want to work there bc that is just the tip of the iceberg in my experience.

The reality is, it doesn't matter what any of us think is unprofessional. It only matter how it is perceived by your boss (and up) and the hiring committee. It sucks, but fair doesn't enter into play here. You don't have a right to the new job, kwim.
For now, I would chose option B and try to avoid the subject.

If you wear a small diamond stud I vote definitely no. You can take this with a grain of salt because I have pink hair and eyebrows, 7 ear piercings, tongue and nose and very visible tattoos at my gov't job. I am way more casual than business (we are technically 'business casual but people wear zip hoodies so... managers are the only businessy ones really) BUT I do a damn good job so I get away with it I guess. And my little elderly clients think i'm quite interesting! Lol.

I'm laughing at this bc I have 5 ear piercings in each ear (10 total) nose pierced, visible tattoos, had my tongue pierced, had my navel pierced (of course that was not visible) and work for the federal government. I am close to my mid 40s. I am seriously considering doing my hair a wild color but have not gone there yet. My coworker who just turned 60 just got her nose pierced, another one who just turned 55 finished her sleeve. So it's not always the old stuffy ones you'd think who are the pearl clutchers. In my younger years I would have pegged govt office workers to be all pent up, not in my office. You should see us!
I would wear a clear retainer until you figure out the culture. I say this as a person with three earlobe holes per ear and a tragus and cartilage piercing in one ear. I am a professor and figured out that one earring/lobe and my cartilage are “okay.” Now that I have tenure and full professor, I added the tragus (two years ago) because I don’t care anymore.

I'm not sure I would notice it unless it was a huge ring or something that visibly stood out. I work with a few people who have this piercing and I don't notice it on anyone except my officemate Because she is usually chatting with me as she is taking her jewelry out or putting it back in ( it's not allowed in our manufacturing area) so no I wouldn't see it as unprofessional , as wambam said does it impede the ability to do your job? Ya didn't think so lol.
