I went for a consultation with a new hair dresser and he told me not to go grey and that I'd look old and hate it. And I just looked at him. I wanted to say, what's wrong with looking older? Seriously. So, what. Do we tell men that are turning grey that it doesn't suit them, they look older and they should dye their hair? I bet he doesn't. I bet he think the men look distinguished. But women look old. Fuck that. Now I want to let my hair go grey out of rebellion.
I haven't commented here in forever, but wanted to share my experience with going gray. I'm 36, stopped dying my hair a year and a half ago. The time and money saved is unbelievable, and I love the feeling of being "natural" after 20 years of dying. My recommendation is to go for it!

jeaniebueller, I've begun to wonder if the dyeing of my hair is contributing to my hair texture and that if I allow my greys to just come in, it'll actually be a lot healthier and shinier looking, and so I'll actually look better.

I am not yet greying BUT I did stop coloring for a long while with the hopes of my hair getting healthier and looking better. It did not (no worse or anything either) and apparently the way my hair looks is just the way it looks; it is not getting fabulous any day no matter what I do. I hope it does work for you mrsukyankee. Report back please.
I'm not usually on this board but you're speaking my language! I stopped coloring my hair last year at this time (right after Christmas) and it's been the best decision. For me, the first 4-6 weeks were the hardest and after I embraced it I was just excited to see how it would grow out. It helped that my 12 year old daughter was just as excited to see my silvers. Almost everyone has been positive except one friend expressed doubts when I told her what I was doing, telling me I'd look old and even she recently told me my hair looks great. As someone else on this thread, the time and money saved not sitting in a chair every month has been amazing too. Still can't wait to see the end result.

I just got the chop. I LOVE IT! I'll post pics later. You can't see much of my grey roots because of how she cut it which is nice. I feel about 5 years younger with this cut.
This was my first chop - due to my curls, you can't see too much of the grey. I was at 6 weeks post last dyeing appointment. It looks so much better in person than in the photo:
Chop number 2 - took a bit too much off this time, but you can really see the grey. I did it because I'm probably not going to be cutting it for 6+ weeks and as my hair grows quickly, it made sense. It still looks better in person than in this pic. This is at week 10 past my last dyeing appointment:
My last dye job was back in the summer. My roots are coming in with fewer grays than dark brown, but it is still a decent number of grays. However, it is crazy to think that my grays won’t be fully grown out until 2-3 years from now since my hair is nearly to my waist.
My last color appointment was 9 weeks ago and I have one schedule for next Friday. My gray is coming in pretty evenly, from what I can tell. It used to just be through my center part (but not a side part) and my temples. Instead of covering it, I think I'm going to ask her to see what she can do to blend it and then cut 3-4 inches. I'm excited/nervous!
