Anyone have any recommendations for hotels in Phuket with kids...preferably someplace with a kids club? (And while I'm at it, any good recs for Chiang Mai?) Kids will be 9, 9, 7, and 2.5 years old.
Our big summer vacation next year is 5 days in Tokyo and then 2 weeks in Thailand, with time in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Phuket will kind of be the relaxing part of our trip. DH grew up as an ex-pat in Thailand, so he's excited to show us around, but a lot has changed since he was back there almost 20 years ago.
I don’t have kids but when I was in Phuket there were kid friendly areas near Karon Beach. I stayed there and it was a very chill and I saw a lot of kids.
Stay away from Patong beach it is not kid friendly and a very drunk x rated place at night.
If you want to see elephants, please don’t ride them it’s not good for them. The Green elephant sanctuary was amazing. It was so cool to feed them, wash them, pet them and really get up close to the amazing creatures.

When I went B was too young for kids clubs. Pretty much any big hotel brand (Hilton, Marriott, etc.) will likely have one. You little one probably won’t be able to go alone, but you can likely hire a hotel babysitter to go to the club with him or watch him in your room.
We stayed at the Katathani in Kata Noi and it was great. One of the best hotel breakfast buffets I’ve ever had and I have tried a lot.
We also had one night at the Doubletree in Surin. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the hotel, but Surin was really nice and closer to the airport.
I haven’t been to Chiang Mai, but I’ve been to Bangkok a few times and it is hard to find kid’s clubs there. I think the Anantara River Resort is one of the only ones. I haven’t stayed there but I don’t think the kid’s club is a very good one.

Thank you for the sanctuary rec. We want to see them, and definitely knew riding was out of the question for the reason you sited, but I hadn't yet started researching which places were legit and kept the animals safe vs. more tourist-trap where the animals weren't as cared for.
