I've never heard of this from Disney, but I've also gotten into my room before 3:00 on at least half of our trips. Once we were offered a different room than they had originally planned for us (ground floor instead of third at Board Walk) if we wanted early check-in, and we took it.
On our last few trips, cast members have commented on our history and we've gotten upgrades/early check-in/both. I have no idea if it's coincidence or just pixie dust/luck.

No, this is not an option. Your room could be ready early and you can request first available room for your booking category. However DVC rooms can also be late. I would not expect to get in before 4.
If you are staying in a DVC villa, dont count on getting the room early. If it is ready early, you will luck out. Requesting it does absolutely nothing. You also cannot get a late check out so be prepared to be out by 11 am. Contractually, they do not have to have the room ready by 4 pm and many times it still isn't ready by then.

What category did you book?
It's a 1 br villa at bay lake booked right at the 7month point.

Is that what you were asking?
No, I was asking what view you booked. If you have a theme park view I would request a higher floor and not take the first available room.
